WAYNESBORO – A late-night fire at a duplex displaced a family of five Monday evening, March 24. The blaze broke out around 9 p.m. at 326 W. Second St., affecting one side of the residence while the other remained vacant.
The homeowner said he was in bed when his wife smelled smoke, prompting the family to evacuate safely. The fire originated in the attic and spread to the rear of the house, causing significant damage but no injuries.
Fire crews from multiple departments, including Waynesboro Fire Company, New Franklin, Blue Ridge Summit, and Mont Alto, responded to the scene. Additional support came from Fountaindale Volunteer Fire Department, Smithsburg Community Fire Company, Leitersburg Rescue Engine, and Raven Rock teams.
Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire. The displaced family is receiving assistance as recovery efforts continue.
