Antietam history group to host presentation about ‘Wonderful Illustrator of Franklin County’

HAGERSTOWN – Certified genealogist Pam Anderson will present an illustrated program “W. W. Denslow: The Wonderful Illustrator of Franklin County,” at the 12th annual meeting of Antietam Historical Association Wednesday, April 16. Denslow (1856–1915), a native of Philadelphia, is best remembered as the illustrator of the first edition of L. Frank Baum’s “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.”

The association will meet at Fountain Head Country Club, 13316 Fountain Head Road.

Anderson will offer scenes from Waynesboro and Washington and Quincy townships from Denslow’s artwork in “Historical Sketch of Franklin County” (1878), accompanied by how they appear today.

The owner of Anderson CoGen in Franklin County, Anderson has written articles for and presented to the Association of Professional Genealogists, the National Genealogical Society, the Maryland, New Jersey and New York genealogical societies and various Franklin County organizations. She researches little known facts about Franklin County, and her works include “The Two Emilie Reeds of Blue Ridge Summit” and “Finding the First Flu Victim of Franklin County.”

During the social hour, Seth Holmes of Waynesboro will exhibit watercolors of local sites, and Anderson will display items related to her presentation. Also during the social hour, Robert S. Benchoff, a Marion P. Grove Fellow of AHA, will sign copies of his new book, “A Sketch of Mount Joy School.” Pianist Sally Wolfe will perform during the social hour at 5:30 p.m. and during dinner at 6:30 p.m.

The cost is $45 per person due by Tuesday, April 8. For reservations, readers may send a check to AHA, 119 W. Main St., Waynesboro 17268. For more information, they also may call 717-762-2006 or email AHA at [email protected].
