College Corner: Barnes will be missed by Millersville, Greencastle-Antrim communities

Sydney Barnes, Millersville Golf

Years ago we started College Corner as a way to spotlight local athletes competing at the next level.

But today we find ourselves memorializing one of them.

Sydney Barnes, who enjoyed a brilliant golf career at Greencastle-Antrim and was in her third year competing for Millersville, passed away in October after being struck by a vehicle. It was a tragic end to the life of a young woman who had touched so many with her beaming smile.

Millersville released a statement on its athletics website, saying:

“Sydney was a bright light in the Millersville University community: An exceptional student, a dedicated teammate and a friend to many. She was a three-year starter for women’s golf, playing in 27 events and helping the program set a school record for wins in 2025. She memorably recorded the first hole-in-one in the history of the program as a freshman.

“Sydney played the game and lived life with a smile and joy that came from her faith, which was evident to all. She was an active member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She excelled as a student and was named Women’s Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete. Her presence on the team, within the Athletic department and on the Millersville University campus will be greatly missed.

“Millersville extends its deepest sympathies to Sydney’s family, friends, classmates and teammates.”

In College Corner this month, we’ll take a closer look at Barnes’ final season for the Marauders, while also shining the spotlight on other former Greencastle athletes competing at the collegiate level. In the months to come College Corner will shift its focus to Chambersburg and Waynesboro, before circling back to Greencastle.

Are we missing anybody? Additions for College Corner can be sent to Andy Sandrik via email at [email protected].
