The club swimming postseason is heating up, and Chambersburg Memorial YMCA is all over the action.
The team put together a strong performance at the Pennsylvania YMCA State Championships, held in Morgantown, W.Va., on March 21-23. Competing in a field of 60 squads, Chambersburg’s boys and girls each nailed down fourth-place finishes in the team race.
The boys, who posted 197 points, got individual wins from Elijah Barley (10U 50 breaststroke, 35.39), River Strait (11-12 200 Breaststroke, 2:27.48), and Gabriel Kahsay (15-21 200 butterfly, 1:57.20. Thanks to the cooperative swimming of Strait, Brett Boyer, Micah Ritchie, and Brody Dreyer, Chambersburg won two relays in the 11-12 division: The 400 freestyle relay (3:52.64) and 200 medley relay (1:54.76).
Chambersburg’s girls amassed 205 points and were led by the efforts of two swimmers in the 13-14 division: Calla Hoffman and Alyssa Detwiler. Hoffman struck for double state gold in the 100 backstroke (59.20) and 200 backstroke (2:07.06), while Detwiler was the champion in the 400 IM (4:44.36).
Chambersburg is currently competing at the YMCA National Short Course Swimming Championships in Greensboro, N.C.
