The club swimmers for the Chambersburg Memorial YMCA are no strangers to the awards stand, not even on the national level.
Competing at the YMCA National Short Course Championships in Greensboro, N.C. — a meet composed of 166 teams — Chambersburg’s Chargers blasted off for four Top 8 finishes. Amir Tasker landed a pair of seventh-place finishes in the 500 freestyle (4:37.94) and 1,000 freestyle (9:26.03), while Cullen McGraw secured eighth place in both the 500 freestyle (4:38.20) and 1,650 freestyle (16:01.42).
Alex Kaczmark also shined for Chambersburg with 14th-place finishes in the 200 freestyle (1:40.57) and 200 butterfly (1:51.35). The Chargers got their best relay finish from the team Tasker, Kaczmark, Gabriel Kahsay, and Cristian Pong, who guided Chambersburg’s 800 freestyle relay squad to 11th place in 6:49.48.
With those boys leading the charge, the Chargers finished 15th in the team race with 69 points.
Waynesboro Area YMCA’s Eve Phillips secured the area’s highest finish in North Carolina. Phillips, a Mount Saint Mary’s recruit, took fifth in the 50 freestyle (23.44) and 12th in the 100 freestyle (51.20).
The YMCA of Hagerstown Gators were also recently in competition at the East Field South District Championships in Laurel, Md. The team was highlighted by the efforts of Haley Fuss, who won four events in the 10U division: The 50 freestyle (29.15), 100 backstroke (1:16.97), 50 butterfly (31.65), and 100 butterfly (1:12.91).
