Chambersburg firefighter honored as ‘Do Good Hero’

CHAMBERSBURG – Anthony Chen, Tower 1 Driver for the Chambersburg Fire Department, has been selected as one of the monthly winners for National Life’S Do Good Heroes Award. Sponsored by the National Life Group Foundation, this award program honors fire rescue and police personnel and departments who perform community service activities above and beyond their public safety duty.

As a Do Good Heroes award winner, Chen will receive $500 to donate to the Chambersburg Community Police Foundation. He will be recognized during a celebration on Monday, March 17, at 7 p.m. at the Chambersburg Fire Department headquarters.

Chen was nominated by Lewis Morrell and Kevin Zebrowski of the Protection Red first responder financial planning firm for his selflessness and leadership in the Chambersburg community. He has been an active member of the department since August 2016.

Prior to becoming a firefighter, Chen served in the U.S. Army Airborne Infantry from 2007-2011. His military service instilled discipline, leadership and a community-oriented mindset, nominators said.

Outside of his role, Chen created the “Holiday with Heroes” program. Through that initiative, firefighters and law enforcement officers were partnered with 35 impoverished and homeless families from the local school district, as well as veterans’ families. Each family went shopping with a first responder and received $300 to spend for themselves, along with $200 worth of food items.

“Anthony’s selfless service, unwavering commitment to others and leadership have impacted the lives of many. He is a true embodiment of the values that this recognition honors,” said Morrell.
