There is nothing easy about the Keystone Southeast Qualifier, a tournament designed to weed out all but the strongest wrestlers in preparation for the Keystone State Championships.
That heightened level of difficulty, however, didn’t intimidate a group of 15 Franklin County wrestlers who were able to navigate the choppy waters of Spooky Nook Sports Complex and punch their tickets to the state tournament.
Waynesboro’s Ace Beltz won the Boys 10U championship at 65 pounds, while Greencastle-Antrim’s Jackson Polifka captured top honors at 145 pounds in the Boys 16U division.
Beltz led the way for a group of Waynesboro qualifiers that included Carter Baker (3rd at Boys 8U 110), Luke Swope (4th at Boys 8U 45), Jaxin Baker (4th at Boys 6U 61), and Noah Swope (6th at Boys 10U 60). The Tribe also got an eighth-place finish from 252-pounder Benjamin Bechtel in the Boys 14U.
Polifka was the headliner for a group of Greencastle qualifiers that included Ethan Allen (2nd at Boys 14U 140), Walker Reitz (3rd at Boys 6U 40), and Liam Deitrich (5th at Boys 12U 145). The Blue Devils also had a couple of eighth-place finishers in Elijah Hess (Boys 16U 130) and Brycen Teller (8th at Boys 14U 192).
Chambersburg pushed six wrestlers past the qualifier, including Gabriel Creamer (4th in Boys 12U 115), Samuel Stoner (4th at 10U 150), Corey Rivera (5th at Boys 16U 130), Benjamin Mayhugh (6th at Boys 10U 120), Frankie Bryan (7th in Boys 12U 85), and Knox Bryan (7th at Boys 10U 75). The Trojans also got top finishes from Ezra Kump (8th at Boys 10U 90) and Myles Spidell (8th at Boys 10U 65).
An accompanying girls non-qualifier tournament was held at Spooky Nook, and four area competitors earned medals: Waynesboro’s Ava Baker (3rd at 99.9), Addilynn Warnick (3rd at 105.5), and Emma Swope (4th at 68), and Greencastle’s Harper Duffey (3rd at 91.5).
The Keystone State Championships will be held at Penn State’s Bryce Jordan Center on March 13-15.
The CPWA Intermediate Championship was also held in recent weeks, with two locals nailing down championships: Waynesboro’s Konnor Sickles (151) and Chambersburg’s Ben Castro (106).
