CHAMBERSBURG- The Franklin County Commissioners honored the Greater Chambersburg Chamber of Commerce on Thursday for its two-decade stewardship of the county’s iconic Benjamin Franklin statue. Commissioners presented Chamber President Steve Christian with a certificate of appreciation for the organization’s role as “foster family” to the beloved statue, which recently returned to county property after 19 years on display at the Chamber. The 8-foot, 250-pound gold-leafed wooden statue was originally commissioned in 1865 to stand atop the county’s new courthouse following the burning of Chambersburg during the Civil War. HARRISBURG – The public is being asked to submit feedback on the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s plan for $171.5 million in electric vehicle charging infrastructure throughout the state. Women diagnosed with breast cancer who had regular screening mammograms every year were less likely to have late-stage cancer and had higher overall survival than those who received screening every other year or less often, according to new research from the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. “Only about 65 percent of women over age 40 are screened for breast cancer, and only about half of those women are getting annual screening — in part because of conflicting guidelines about recommended screening intervals,” said lead author Margarita Zuley, M.D., professor and chief of the…

HAGERSTOWN, Md.- Washington County has been awarded more than $1.5 million to help preserve properties near Antietam Battlefield and surrounding areas, the Washington County Division of Planning & Zoning has announced. The money, $1,544,000, comes from the State of Maryland’s Rural Legacy Program. This grant amount is the highest of any Rural Legacy Area in the state for this year.  Rural Legacy is a conservation easement program funded by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources that works to permanently preserve agriculturally, environmentally and historically significant properties near Antietam Battlefield and its surrounding areas. Washington County settled its first Rural Legacy easement in…
