WAYNESBORO – A week ago, the Waynesboro Area Senior High School boys’ and girls’ swim teams both achieved a milestone in the school’s second season of sanctioned swimming. After competing as an independent for years, the Indians and Maidens – coached by Sharon McIlquham – joined the Mid-Penn Conference and were sanctioned members of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association two seasons ago. A wonderful combination of individual talent and depth across the 11 events, the 2023-24 squads proved too much for opponents to handle, resulting in Mid-Penn Colonial Division titles this season. The Maidens consistently won three-fourths or more of…

WAYNESBORO – The Waynesboro Maidens varsity basketball team led the Greencastle-Antrim Blue Devils for most of their Mid-Penn Colonial Division game on Friday, Feb. 2. But Greencastle took the lead when it mattered most, leaving Waynesboro reeling from its third straight loss, 52-50, and slipping further behind in the PIAA District 3-6A power ratings. Senior Haley Noblit maneuvered her way swiftly through the lane and threw up a layup that proved to be the winning points with 3.5 seconds remaining in the game. The Maidens, who led 20-8 in the second quarter but couldn’t put the Blue Devils away, fell…
WAYNESBORO – A day after a disappointing loss to Big Spring on Pack the House Night, the Waynesboro varsity boys’ basketball team rebounded to defeat Shippensburg, 49-39, in a Mid-Penn Colonial Division game on Tuesday. Grant Thompson carried the team on his back as he finished with a game-high 21 points. Thompson was 8 for 11 shooting. He added 11 rebounds to record a double-double. It took a while for the Indians to get things going in front of the home crowd as the Greyhounds led 14-12 after the first quarter. However, Waynesboro outscored Shippensburg 14-6 in the second quarter…

The boys won 139-37; the Maidens won 123-54, It was the second straight season the girls won a division crown. It’s the first title for the Indians. The depth of both squads makes it difficult for opposing teams. Add that to some outstanding individual talent and performances, and you have the recipe for winning.…
WAYNESBORO – Monday night’s Pack the House Night game between Waynesboro and Big Spring was supposed to be played on Friday, Jan. 19. But Mother Nature dumped some snow that forced the annual game to be postponed until Monday, Jan. 29. The atmosphere most certainly didn’t disappoint. The students from Fairview, Hooverville, Mowrey, and Summitview Elementary schools brought plenty of noise and enthusiasm. But something seemed lacking in the Waynesboro varsity boys’ basketball players, who struggled from the opening tip to the final buzzer against the Big Spring Bulldogs. The Indians never led – and the game was never tied…
It wouldn’t be Pack the House Night without elementary school mascots. Here’s two of them. At left is the Summitview Shark, and on the right is the Hooverville Hornet. At the end of the third quarter of Monday’s high school varsity boys’ basketball game, public address announcer Will Kauffman announced each of the Waynesboro area elementary schools (Fairview, Hooverville, Mowrey and Summitview) and asked them to give a yell as part of an informal contest on which school was the most vocal. Each school more than represented their enthusiasm, and no winner was announced. (Lee Goodwin)

It’s been an up-and-down season for the Waynesboro Area Senior High School boys’ varsity basketball team. Lately, it’s been up. On Friday, Waynesboro built an early lead and then held off a Gettysburg rally for a 57-52 Mid-Penn Colonial Division victory. On Tuesday, Waynesboro overcame a first-half deficit and defeated James Buchanan, 51-35, in a divisional contest in Mercersburg. The Tribe (7-9) have won five of the last five games, with the loss coming at home against Greencastle-Antrim. Waynesboro led 17-8 against the Warriors and took a 29-19 lead into the halftime intermission. The lead was 42-31 after three quarters…
WAYNESBORO – There’s a common term to describe a win characterized by less-than-stellar performance. It’s called winning “ugly.” You might say the Waynesboro Maidens varsity basketball team won that way on Friday night inside the Waynesboro Area Senior High School gymnasium. The Maidens led 9-8 at halftime and then couldn’t buy a basket in the second half. Still, somehow Waynesboro found a way to win. Nikki Davis drained a three-point field goal with 1:56 to play in the game and the Maidens’ defense swarmed to the ball to prevent the Warriors from getting off decent shots. Final score: Waynesboro 24,…
BOILING SPRINGS – The Waynesboro Area Senior High School boys’ and girls’ swim teams aren’t only chalking up wins, but they are keeping up with each other. The Maidens one-upped the Indians a year ago by going undefeated and winning the Mid-Penn Colonial Division. This season, both teams are rolling – er, splashing – along. On Tuesday, Jan. 23, coach Sharon McIlquham celebrated another league title as the girls’ squad defeated Boiling Springs 97-88. The boys’ team also came away with a win as the Tribe eked out a 93-90 victory. The win keeps the Maidens undefeated at 6-0. The…
