WAYNESBORO – The Waynesboro Indians varsity basketball team has its version of the Big Three, and they all scored in double digits to help propel them to their third straight win on Friday. Jaylon Bean scored 15 points. Ryan Shaffer and Reese Cover each finished with 14 points, as Waynesboro improved to 3-1 after defeating Big Spring, 68-45, in a Mid-Penn Colonial Division contest. The Tribe beat James Buchanan on Tuesday, 62-42, in a game that Cover and Bean posted 13-point scoring nights. Waynesboro countered Big Spring’s pesky 2-3 zone defense with a back-breaking perimeter shooting effort, combined with patient…

It’s true that the college football bowl season has taken on a different meaning since the Big Bad Wolf called the College Football Playoff blew down the house seven years ago. But, as in life, it’s a matter of perspective and tuning out the talking heads who believe that the only games that matter are the CFP semifinals and the still “mythical” national championship game. Talk on, talking heads. I ain’t listening. So, with a mind to enjoy the remains of the day in college football, here’s a look at some of the bowl games to watch. And, try to…

WAYNESBORO – The Waynesboro Maidens varsity basketball team won their first game in quite some time but couldn’t follow it up with another. The Waynesboro Indians ran into an always-tough Chambersburg Trojans team in the semifinals of the Franklin County Tipoff Tournament and followed up a 70-54 loss on Friday with a 61-28 victory in Saturday’s consolation game against Greencastle-Antrim. G-A’s Haley Noblit was lethal from three-point range, and her performance in the Blue Devils’ 42-10 win against the Maidens in the girls’ championship game helped earn her selection as tournament Most Valuable Player. Greencastle jumped out to a 9-0…

I’ve written in a past column how the College Football Playoff has diminished the value of bowl games. It was true even before the CFP came into existence in 2014. It was true for the brief duration of the Bowl Alliance and the longer tenure of the confusing Bowl Championship Series. It takes a lot of perspective to appreciate the current bowl season. And, what better way to wrap it into a nice present and put a bow on it than reflecting on the of Penn State’s bowl appearances. Here’s a Top 5: 1994 Rose Bowl, Penn State 38, Oregon…

Villanova raced out to a 14-0 halftime lead against Holy Cross and held on for a 21-16 win in the second round of the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) playoffs, Friday at Villanova. The subhead of the Villanova football website’s story about the game read, “Three rushing touchdowns and monster defensive effort from Forrest Rhyne were the difference for Villanova, which now heads to quarterfinals for seventh time in its FCS history and first since 2014.” Rhyne, a graduate student linebacker and finalists for the Buck Buchanan Award, recorded double digits in tackles in both halves and finished the game with…

Forrest Rhyne made a name for himself as a dominating linebacker for the Waynesboro Indians varsity football team. He’s doing the same thing at an even higher level with the Villanova Wildcats. Rhyne, a two-time All State defensive player at Waynesboro, was named the Colonial Athletic Association Football Defensive Player of the Year. The senior became only the fourth player in team history to earn Defensive POY honors, and, while the regular season is in the books, Rhyne and his teammates and coaches aren’t done playing yet. Villanova (9-2) hosts Holy Cross in the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs Friday. The…

Michigan is 3-17 against Ohio State since 2001. But after the Wolverines outplayed and outlasted the Buckeyes 42-27 on Saturday, nobody in Lansing was thinking about their team’s futility against their southern neighbors. In a rivalry that became white hot when Ohio State assistant coach Bo Schembechler accepted the UM head coaching job in 1969, The Game lived up to the hype on a cold and snowy day. Not only did Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh secure his first win against archrival Ohio State (he was 0-6), the Wolverines became only the fourth team from the Big Ten East Division to…
