WAYNESBORO – The Waynesboro Area Senior High School varsity baseball team has arguably experienced the most continuity of any high school program, and not just in Waynesboro. The Indians, under the direction of second-year head coach Travis Hardman, wants to continue its winning ways. And, while other Waynesboro teams highlight opposing teams, it is the baseball team that probably gets extra special attention when players and coaches look at the schedule. Hardman has been a part of the Waynesboro baseball program since the mid-1990s, when he was a standout pitcher who inherited ace status after Matt White graduated in 1996.…

SPRING GROVE – The PIAA South Central Regional District III, Class AAA wrestling tournament has undergone a change of scenery – having moved from the famed Hersheypark Arena to Spring Grove High School in York County. Instead of six mats, wrestlers are competing on four mats in the Spring Grove gymnasium. But the intensity, which was muffled by the echoing sounds in the expansive arena in Hershey, is much closer. There is nothing like the noise generated when spectators are cheering for eight different competitors at the same time. The noise increases when the stakes are higher. The district championships…
WAYNESBORO – Samuel Benshoff was doing what he loved – playing soccer. On Friday, Jan. 10, he met with friends for a meal and fellowship. He never made it home. Benshoff died from injuries suffered in a one-car accident in Washington Township. The shock and grief that followed was profound. It’s hard to explain or accept a life taken so soon. Friends and family pondered the ways to honor Benshoff’s memory – and it was soccer. Benshoff, a 2021 WASHS graduate who played for the Indians, was only 19 years old. He was going back to University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown, where…
WAYNESBORO – The Wilson Bulldogs varsity basketball team didn’t have a whole lot of spectator support in their District 3-6A playoff game against the Waynesboro Indians. A sparse Wilson cheering section didn’t make any difference at all for the Berks County League team, which made the two-plus hour trip from the Reading area to play its Mid-Penn Colonial Division I opponent. At stake was a trip to the quarterfinals against top-seed Reading on Friday. For the winner of Tuesday night’s game also came at least two more games to determine the top seven finishers who will advance to the PIAA…
HANOVER – Bodie Rouzer and Kaden Rouzer, both seniors on the Waynesboro Area Senior High School varsity wrestling team, punched their respective tickets to this weekend’s PIAA South Central Regional Championships. The Rouzer brothers each placed second at the Section IV tournament hosted by South Western High School on Saturday. Jayden Rooney qualified as a freshman for regionals by placing third in the 113-pound weight class. Prior to the season, Waynesboro coach David Swink spoke highly of Rooney, who dominated in his weight classes at the junior high school level. He also had high praises for the Rouzer twins, who…
Is it me, or is the Super Bowl a lollapalooza instead of a game? Seriously, do people have to be entertained like they are attending an outdoor music/sports festival in order to take in the experience of watching a professional football game? What’s wrong with inviting some college marching bands rather than bringing in singer/entertainers to bellow songs that anyone can listen to on YouTube? After all, nothing brings out the full measure of athletic competition than the sound of trombones, tubas and all those drums. I don’t care what genre. If Simon and Garfunkel showed up to sing Kathy’s…
The Waynesboro Indians varsity basketball team finished the regular season as the eighth-ranked team in District 3-6A. The power ratings were made official on Sunday, along with the official pairings for the playoffs. The postseason begins Tuesday, Feb. 22. The top four seeded teams receive byes into the quarterfinals. Quarterfinal losers will play in the consolation bracket. The top seven of 12 teams advance to the PIAA Championships. Waynesboro (17-4) will host Berks County League’s Wilson (14-7) at 7 p.m. on the 22nd. Wilson, who played top-seeded 6A Reading (18-3) earlier in the season (a 64-36 loss), ended the season…
The Waynesboro Indians varsity basketball team finished the regular season with a 17-4 record that included a share of the Mid-Penn Colonial Division championship with Shippensburg. Waynesboro’s 60-50 victory over the Greyhounds gave the Tribe a 13-1 league record and a banner in the Waynesboro Area Senior High School gymnasium. The following Tuesday, head coach Tom Hoffman’s squad followed up with a 58-45 win at Mechanicsburg. And, on Thursday, Mid-Penn Commonwealth Division opponent Carlisle came into Waynesboro and surprised Waynesboro with a 68-53 triumph. The Thundering Herd, which played three of the top six rated District 3-6A teams (Cumberland Valley,…
WAYNESBORO – Waynesboro’s boys’ basketball team had its sights set on at least a share of the Mid-Penn Colonial Division championship. But, to do that, the Indians had to rally against the Shippensburg Greyhounds, a team that entered Saturday night’s game as the leader of the division with a sparkling 11-0 record. Waynesboro was 12-1. The Tribe’s only league loss was to Shippensburg, a 63-54 setback on Jan. 22 in Shippensburg. Prospects of a comeback against a team that has size and quickness – not to mention accurate shooting from the field – began to dim when the Greyhounds scored…
GREENCASTLE – The Waynesboro Area Senior High School varsity boys’ basketball team defeated Greencastle-Antrim for the third time this season, this time on the road. Waynesboro broke open a close game after halftime and went on to notch a 69-46 victory on Tuesday night in a Mid-Penn Colonial Division contest. The Indians (15-3) beat the Blue Devils 61-28 in the Franklin County Tipoff Tournament consolation game on Dec. 11. Waynesboro added a 52-23 win on Jan. 7. Waynesboro, which improved to 12-1 in the league and prepares for a showdown with Shippensburg at home on Friday, led 21-6 at halftime…
