GREENCASTLE – Luke Martin pitched his first ever varsity baseball game on a soggy Tuesday afternoon. It happened to be against the first-place team in the Mid-Penn Colonial Division – the Greencastle-Antrim Blue Devils – at Kaley Field. All in all, Martin turned in a strong performance. He pitched four full innings and gave up five singles with a strikeout and two walks. The problem for the Indians was that Greencastle started its ace, Andrew Kerns. The junior blue-chipper struck out 12 batters en route to a 6 2/3 innings effort in which he gave up just two hits. “(He)…

To everything there is a season. When will the architects of spring football leagues get it? Football, a sport once nearly banned by Theodore Roosevelt in the early 1900s due to the number of injuries – and deaths – has evolved into a true America’s Pastime. Baseball, the only sport protected by Congress, is fast becoming yesterday’s news. Overblown salaries and too many promotional commercials, and (let’s not forget) the desperate move to add interleague games to the schedule after the infamous lockout that spanned two seasons in 1994 and 1995. Baseball, like golf, are not meant to be enjoyed…

WAYNESBORO – High school baseball has is share of micro rivalries. This season, the Mid-Penn Colonial Division is filled with them. On Monday, Waynesboro and Northern York finally had the chance to continue what it started last season, when the Polar Bears eked out a division crown, but the Indians hosted a District 3 playoff game. On the heels of a 7-4 win over West Perry – and a season sweep of the Mustangs – Waynesboro is trying to keep its league loss ledger to one game, that being Shippensburg. The Indians, who rallied from down 2-0 against Big Spring…

When I was a child, I celebrated holidays like most other families. At Christmas, I opened presents under the tree. At Easter, I looked for pastel color eggs and ate lots of chocolate. Yes, the two biggest days of the year occupied my thoughts for many days before they arrived on the calendar. But something didn’t feel right. Something still doesn’t feel right. We observe times and seasons like generations before us. Yet, in the still of the night or the meanderings of the day, we look back and wonder why we don’t feel at all satisfied that what we…

WAYNESBORO – It looked like extra innings loomed Thursday between Waynesboro and Shippensburg. But the Greyhounds erupted for five runs in the top of the seventh inning and sealed a 13-8 varsity baseball victory against the host Indians. It was Waynesboro’s first Mid-Penn Colonial Division setback this season. It wasn’t a good day for pitchers. The wind was straight to center field, and in addition to a number of passed balls, six batters were hit by pitches. Runs have been plentiful for the Tribe so far in 2022. With the exception of a goose egg in the season opener against…

The Waynesboro Area Senior High School varsity baseball team has been playing two opponents so far in the 2022 season – other teams and the weather. The Indians, which enter the week with a 3-1 record, were supposed to have played seven games by now. However, contests against Greencastle-Antrim and Northern York were postponed due to rain, making for a jam-packed week of April 25 on the horizon. A home game against Harrisburg this past Friday was suspended. In the meantime, Waynesboro absorbed its lone loss of the early season against Cedar Cliff on opening day. The Colts, 5-2 out…

WAYNESBORO – It’s been a strange two years for spring high school sports. The 2020 season was lost to COVID-19. The 2021 season was, in some ways, a restart after not playing games for two calendar years. For Waynesboro, last season wasn’t kind to the Maidens. They finished 7-13 after playing in the PIAA tournament the year before. Steven McElroy didn’t get to coach a single game in 2020 in his first season after succeeding Aaron Burke. But McElroy is eager to make good memories in 2022, and the team got off to a winning start to the season with…
