Summer is a time to relax. It is also a time for youngsters to stay active. One way to achieve that is to participate in summer sports camps. Below is a short list of camps and clinics at area colleges: Penn State – Mont Alto Nittany Lion Volleyball Summer Skills Camp, Aug. 1-4, 6 to 8 p.m. Open to female volleyball players in grades 7-12. Cost: $100. The session includes advanced individual skills and elite game-like drills. WAYNESBORO – The American Legion baseball season is still young. For most teams, getting into a rhythm has been a challenge. Waynesboro Post 15 has had to reschedule two games (Biglerville and Greencastle) due to opposing teams being short on players; another game against McConnellsburg scheduled for Monday will have to wait until another day since Southern Fulton High School is still competing in the PIAA tournament. But it must have made the Waynesboro players satisfied after Post 15 defeated Fort Loudon, 14-1 in a game shortened by the 10-run rule. Waynesboro posted five runs in each of the first…
WAYNESBORO – The Waynesboro Area YMCA held its 7th annual Strokes, Spokes and Strides mini-triathlon on a soggy Saturday morning. But the rain and chilly feel to the air on a mid-June morning didn’t dampen the spirits of the men and women (and children) who were looking for a challenge and an adventure. That’s exactly what they got out of the event that has become a virtual centerpiece for the local YMCA. The enthusiasm and positivity was in abundance in an event that began with a prayer and had an organized “cheer” group urging competitors on. The triathlon consisted of…
WAYNESBORO – James and Jess Zawatski used to sell curiosity items and old furniture from their Hagerstown, Maryland home and nearby 10-foot by 20-foot storage unit. But they outgrew both spaces, and, in 2016, leased space in a bigger building at 37 W. Main St From the looks of things inside the vast James and Jess House of Goods shop in downtown Waynesboro they might need more space. Until then, and market permitting, the couple will continue pursuing unique and antique finds to sell to curious people from not just the Waynesboro area but from other states, who discovered the…
The Waynesboro American Legion Post 15 baseball team captured two wins this past week with wins against Shippensburg in a Franklin County American Legion League and Laurel (Maryland) in a non-league contest. Waynesboro claimed a 11-4 victory on Wednesday, June 1, coming from behind to erase a 4-1 deficit. Shippensburg got things started with three runs in the first inning. Waynesboro Post 15 American Legion pulled away for good with four runs in the fourth inning. In the fourth, Josh Clapsaddle drew a walk, scoring one run and Bryce Shaffer tripled on an 0-1 count, scoring three runs to put Waynesboro…
WAYNESBORO – It wouldn’t be summer in Waynesboro without two things – Northside Pool and the Waynesboro Market at the Park. It just wouldn’t. If you’re a local resident, sometimes provincial to a fault, something inside you beckons you to stay close to your dwelling place and make a short trip to a place that offers a little of everything – from home-grown mushrooms to home-made soaps, donuts, cakes, even straw brooms, arts and crafts, and mouth-watering tamales and empanadas. The list of stuff that’s for sale is too long to list here, so you’ll have to stop by between…
WAYNESBORO – From the regulars to the occasional visitors, the Northside Pool in Waynesboro has become an institution, not just locally but in the surrounding area. It’s a destination for youngsters attending daycare facilities, families, school-age children who are looking for something to do during the summer months that will bring them in close contact with classmates and strangers, and, the regulars like Ben Taylor, who at 72 years old sits in his camp chair in the shade and walks the length of the pool talking to people he knows and enjoying the sun. “I’ve been coming to the pool…
There is a reckoning for individuals and for countries. I’m surprised it has not already happened, but like the sunrise and sunset, it is inevitable. It seems obvious that, in witnessing the intensity of world events, that we are getting closer and closer to a single cataclysmic event – or a series of catastrophic events. While the war in Ukraine (it is not a war at all, but, rather, an invasion by one country into another) is, at least on the nightly news, tragic for the one country, it is not the single event that may (will) lead the world…
WAYNESBORO – There are probably two dates in particular that those associated with Waynesboro Youth League mark on their calendars – Opening Day and Memorial Day. On Monday, the league held what could almost be considered as a marathon, with games starting at noon following the Memorial Day parade and memorial commemoration at Memorial Park in Waynesboro and concluding with the nightcap at 6 p.m. “Those are the two biggest days,” said WYL President and manager of American Legion Justin Biser. “All the fields are being used and games are played all day. It has the most turnout; people are…
When you think of Mount St. Mary’s, you probably think men’s basketball. After all, the Mountaineers, playing on an NCAA Division I campus just 16 miles from Waynesboro, has long been a popular destination for hoops enthusiasts. Along with taking in the boisterous atmosphere of 3,121-seat capacity Knott Arena in Emmitsburg, Maryland, many made the short rip just to see the man with the bowtie – head coach Jim Phelan. Phelan coached at Mount St. Mary’s from the late 1954 until 2003. Along the way, Phelan guided the Mount to an NCAA Division II national championship in 1962, a national…
