HERSHEY – The Waynesboro varsity football team didn’t get to venture into the park or ride the rides, but they still left Hersheypark happy on Friday night. Jaylon Bean punched it in on a 1-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, and Cody Tharp galloped into the end zone on an 8-yard run on the opening possession of the third quarter for what proved to be the winning points, as the Indians defeated the Hershey Trojans, 13-7 at Hersheypark Stadium. The win evened Waynesboro’s record at 1-1 awaiting its first home game of the season next Friday against Chambersburg. After…

The life of a Penn State football fan has been full of ups and downs since the ouster and death of long-time head coach Joe Paterno. Let’s face it, the scars left by the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal have left an enduring impact on a program that was known for being squeaky clean. Paterno was elevated to the status of patron saint of college football coaches. He even gave incoming freshmen reading lists as a “prerequisite” for playing football. The message: Never forget that you are a student first, a college football player second. The events of Nov. 8…

The takeover of NCAA Division I-A, which later became known as Football Bowl Subdivision, began in the early 1990s. The maneuvering to make the sport under the sole auspices of entities other than the National Collegiate Athletic Association entered a new phase recently when, according to a report published on ESPN.com, “the (College Football Playoff) board of managers briefly discussed the possibility of restructuring how college football is governed, with the idea presented of major college football potentially being governed outside of the NCAA. The most logical place for the sport to be run outside of the NCAA would be…

The plot continues to thicken in NCAA Division I college football, and the Age of the Super Conferences has dawned. Perhaps we could have read the tea leaves nearly 30 years ago when the Southeastern Conference and the Atlantic Coast Conference introduced new teams to their respective conferences. There was a minor difference, however, since a number of teams were not affiliated with conferences, so adding them to a conference – or starting a conference like the Big East – made perfect sense. Flash forward to the year 2022. The SEC is expecting again. So is the Big Ten. Seemingly…

WAYNESBORO – Izzy Reed was on his A-game Monday evening at Robinson Field. The former Waynesboro Indians ace and now a pitcher for Hagerstown Community College, Reed pitched seven solid innings against McConnellsburg Post 561 in a Franklin County American Legion League baseball game, while Waynesboro’s defense backed up Reed with seven solid innings of its own.
