WAYNESBORO – The Waynesboro Maidens varsity volleyball team has gotten used to winning under head coach Kim Saunders. But there’s a new contender in the Mid-Penn Capital Division: James Buchanan. And, on Thursday, the Rockets took down the Maidens in three sets in their first meeting of the season. JB won by scores of 25-16, 25-22 and 25-17. Actually, James Buchanan isn’t exactly the new kid on the block to challenge Waynesboro for supremacy in the division. The Rockets and Maidens shared the league title a season ago. “We graduated five seniors who played varsity for three years, and we…

In a Mid-Penn Colonial Division golf meet that featured a first, the Waynesboro Area Senior High School varsity team shifted into high gear and earned its fourth consecutive division title on Monday at Range End Golf Course in Dillsburg. It hasn’t mattered what course Waynesboro played on. The top four scorers were better than every other team, with the exception of the second meet played at Greencastle Golf Club. In fact, that was Waynesboro’s only loss of the season. Head coach Ryan Henderson’s team finished with a record of 41-1. Waynesboro’s Evan Stein, who has been a model of consistency…
WAYNESBORO – The Waynesboro Indians varsity soccer team has had a rough go of it offensively so far this season. With the exception of a 5-1 win over Mifflin County on Sept. 6, the Indians have been outscored by a combined 15-3, including a 3-1 loss to Greencastle-Antrim on Saturday at Buchanan Automotive Stadium. “We’re struggling,” said Waynesboro head coach Brian Stum. “We have a couple injuries. We have a starter out with a concussion, another with three rods in his leg. “We’re just not strong. You combine all that, it doesn’t give you a good winning percentage.” The degree…
GREENCASTLE – It had to end – sooner or later. For the Greencastle-Antrim Blue Devils, it was later, much later, than they wanted. But on a Friday night made for football, Greencastle ended eight years of frustration against its Route 16 rivals, thanks in large part to a monster game by running back Tavon Cooper. Cooper, a 5-foot-7, 175-pound senior, rushed for 231 yards on 26 carries and scored three touchdowns as the Blue Devils defeated the Tribe, 35-21 in the Mid-Penn Colonial Division opener for both teams, at Kaley Field. “We fought hard, we had some momentum changes,” said…
CHAMBERSBURG – It’s too early to talk about a Mid-Penn Colonial Division championship. But it’s not too early to point out that the Waynesboro Area Senior High School varsity golf team is two wins (or even high places) away from a repeat of a division title. On Tuesday – a day later than scheduled – Waynesboro carded a collective score of 327 to finish 25 strokes ahead of runner-up Greencastle-Antrim to notch six wins. One-loss Waynesboro improved to 29-1, four matches ahead of Greencastle (25-5) with two league meets remaining. The first of those meets took place Wednesday at Gettysburg…
It’s Greencastle week for the Waynesboro Area Senior High School varsity football team. But the game isn’t a big game for that reason alone. The two teams have been playing for the better part of 40-plus years when they were both members of the long-defunct Blue Mountain League. There’s another reason this game is important. It’s also the first Mid-Penn Colonial Division game of the season. That makes the game even more meaningful. The makeup of the division is a big departure from what it looked like back in the day. Gone are Big Spring and West Perry, who moved…
WAYNESBORO – The Waynesboro Maidens varsity soccer team led 2-0 with time winding down in the first half, Saturday at Buchanan Automotive Stadium against South Western. But when the Mustangs scored on a free kick from 25 yards, it appeared that Waynesboro might have been living on borrowed time, to borrow a cliché. Then, South Western tied the non-conference match early in the second half. The Mustangs went on to score two more goals, including the game winner with 24:32 left in the contest, to bring home a 4-2 victory. “We need to mark in the box, and we need…
WAYNESBORO – Games like these should be a yearly thing in high school football. Chambersburg and Waynesboro, two Franklin County schools located around 12 miles from each other, are miles apart when it comes to playing one another in high school football. The two teams, the Trojans from the Mid-Penn Commonwealth Division, and the Indians, from the Mid-Penn Colonial Division, met for the first time in nearly a decade. Buchanan Automotive Stadium was packed to near capacity on a clear and breezy Friday night, and before the fireworks show following a Stars and Stripes Game, Chambersburg’s offense produced what it…
CARLISLE – The Waynesboro Area High School varsity golf team not only played six other Mid-Penn Colonial Division teams at Eagles Crossing – they also played through a soggy Wednesday afternoon that resulted in a 9-hole match instead of 18 holes. Waynesboro added six more wins to its win total after finishing eight strokes ahead of second-place Greencastle-Antrim. Waynesboro carded a collective score of 157, while Greencastle came in with a score of 165. “I’m proud of my top three,” said Waynesboro coach Ryan Henderson. “They came through with solid scores to lead the way. Ryan (Shaffer’s) 45 helped to…
