In a Mid-Penn Colonial Division golf meet that featured a first, the Waynesboro Area Senior High School varsity team shifted into high gear and earned its fourth consecutive division title on Monday at Range End Golf Course in Dillsburg. It hasn’t mattered what course Waynesboro played on. The top four scorers were better than every other team, with the exception of the second meet played at Greencastle Golf Club. WAYNESBORO – The Waynesboro Indians varsity soccer team has had a rough go of it offensively so far this season. With the exception of a 5-1 win over Mifflin County on Sept. 6, the Indians have been outscored by a combined 15-3, including a 3-1 loss to Greencastle-Antrim on Saturday at Buchanan Automotive Stadium. “We’re struggling,” said Waynesboro head coach Brian Stum. “We have a couple injuries. GREENCASTLE – It had to end – sooner or later. For the Greencastle-Antrim Blue Devils, it was later, much later, than they wanted. But on a Friday night made for football, Greencastle ended eight years of frustration against its Route 16 rivals, thanks in large part to a monster game by running back Tavon Cooper. CHAMBERSBURG – It’s too early to talk about a Mid-Penn Colonial Division championship. But it’s not too early to point out that the Waynesboro Area Senior High School varsity golf team is two wins (or even high places) away from a repeat of a division title. On Tuesday – a day later than scheduled – Waynesboro carded a collective score of 327 to finish 25 strokes ahead of runner-up Greencastle-Antrim to notch six wins. It’s Greencastle week for the Waynesboro Area Senior High School varsity football team. But the game isn’t a big game for that reason alone. The two teams have been playing for the better part of 40-plus years when they were both members of the long-defunct Blue Mountain League. There’s another reason this game is important. Chambersburg and Waynesboro, two Franklin County schools located around 12 miles from each other, are miles apart when it comes to playing one another in high school football.
