WAYNESBORO – It was Senior Day for the Waynesboro varsity softball team, and what a day it was. Eight senior players received a nice sendoff from parents, family and friends: Savannah Brosius, Slaydon Fisher, Bella Donaldson, Trysta Bricker, Karsyn Moore, Sierra Mankins and Michelle Baker. Baker especially must have felt elated once the game against James Buchanan was in the books. The senior right-handed pitcher had one of her finest outings of the 2023 season. Baker scattered five hits, struck out eight and walked two in the complete-game win. The Maidens committed an error in the third inning, but the…

WAYNESBORO – For the second time in two weeks, the Waynesboro Area Senior High School varsity baseball team rallied to beat an opponent after trailing in the bottom of the seventh inning. On April 27, the Indians trailed Northern York 2-0 but scored three runs with two outs to pull off a celebratory victory. And, on a glorious Tuesday afternoon at Robinson Field, Waynesboro seemed like it was dead in the water as they trailed Shippensburg 7-5 in their Mid-Penn Colonial Division game. Calvin Myers, who replaced Aiden Campbell at shortstop and as the second batter in the lineup in…
WAYNESBORO – It took nearly a week for Waynesboro’s varsity baseball game against Greencastle-Antrim to be played. The game was originally postponed on Monday and again on Tuesday. It was then rescheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m., an interesting day for the Blue Devils to be playing baseball – it was also prom day at G-A. Well, the big night awaiting G-A players didn’t affect their motivation or concentration. The Blue Devils compiled eight hits, two off the bat of Ryan Farrow, but they also benefited from Waynesboro mistakes that cost the Indians in a 10-3 loss. Farrow, batting seventh…
WAYNESBORO – It’s been that kind of season for the Waynesboro Area Senior High School varsity baseball team. Up and down. It was down on Wednesday, as the Indians appeared on the verge of another come-from-behind victory like the one against Northern York last week (a 3-2 thriller). This time, however, after overcoming a 2-0 deficit and tying the game, it was West Perry that snapped the tie with two runs in the top of the seventh inning and shutting down Waynesboro’s batting lineup in order in the home seventh for a 4-2 Mid-Penn Colonial Division matchup at Robinson Field…
WAYNESBORO – The Waynesboro and Greencastle-Antrim varsity softball teams met for their annual Pink Out game, with the Blue Devils donned in pink jerseys and the Maidens wearing pink socks to mark the occasion. Mother Nature didn’t cooperate at first, sprinkling rain off and on well into the game. But the sky eventually cleared and the sun peaked down as the clouds passed by and then came back again. The game could have been a pitching duel between Waynesboro’s Michelle Baker and Greencastle-Antrim’s Sophia Layton. But the Blue Devils got the hits when they needed them and capitalized on key…
WAYNESBORO – Yogi Berra once said, “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over.”He also said of a lot of other things that have become part of baseball lore and legend. Maybe that’s why baseball became America’s Pastime.Berra’s words rang loud and true at Robinson Field on a sunny, breezy Thursday afternoon againstNorthern York. The two Mid-Penn Colonial teams faced off for the second time this season. In their first meeting onApril 3, the Polar Bears eked out a 5-4 victory that began an uncharacteristic slump for Waynesboro. The Indians would lose four of their next six games, including a 9-0 loss to Greencastle-Antrim…
WAYNESBORO – It was another spectacular spring day that was tailor-made for a track and field meet, and the Waynesboro boys and girls teams turned in another spectacular performance as they hosted cross-county opponent James Buchanan. The Waynesboro boys team defeated James Buchanan 93-57. The Maidens topped the Lady Rockets 101-49. In the boys competition, the Tribe won two out of the three relay events. The team of Noah Bockstie, Joey Jacobs, Julian Mencia and Wil Campbell won the 3200-meter relay with a time of 8:50.4. The foursome of Williams, Jaylon Bean, Montel Pettway and Preston Hammond won the 400…
WAYNESBORO – The Waynesboro Indians varsity baseball team put together its best effort of the season on Monday afternoon during an 8-1 victory over James Buchanan at Robinson Field. Mason Gochenour pitched a gem of a game and there was plenty of offense to go around. Waynesboro scored two runs in each of the first and second innings, tallied solo runs in the third and fourth and added two more in the sixth. Gochenour, a junior right hander, had arguably the best command of his pitches to date, and, according to Waynesboro head coach Travis Hardman, Gochenour (he also had…
WAYNESBORO – It was a game – until the top of the sixth inning. The Shippensburg Greyhounds varsity softball team broke open a very close game with five runs in the sixth inning on Thursday against the Waynesboro Maidens in a Mid-Penn Colonial Division game. After that, with only two innings to make up all that ground, Waynesboro (3-6) didn’t have the offensive firepower to rally as the Maidens lost 7-0. Shippensburg starting pitcher Cierra Bender struck out four Maidens and was backed up by a capable defense that kept Waynesboro away from home plate. The hosts had only five…
WAYNESBORO – April is an unpredictable month when it comes to weather around southcentral Pennsylvania. But not on Tuesday. The climate couldn’t have been more pleasant, and the outcome of the boys and girls track and field meets against visiting Gettysburg added to the warmth and sunshine. The Indians turned away the Warriors 87-63, and the Maidens defeated the Lady Warriors 90-60 at the Charles A. “Rip” Engle Sports Complex. Despite losing two out of three relays in both meets, thus giving away 10 points, Waynesboro got five points back in the 1600-meter relay. For the boys, it was Michael…
