WAYNESBORO – For two quarters, the Waynesboro Indians varsity football team looked like a champion. But then came the second half. It was as if a flip was switched, and that’s when the Susquehanna Township Indians seized the momentum, the lead and the win on Homecoming Night at Buchanan Automotive Stadium. Waynesboro took a 14-0 lead, led 21-12 at halftime but was outscored 28-0 in the second half as Susquehanna Township rode away with a 40-21 victory in Friday night’s Mid-Penn Colonial Division contest. It wasn’t for lack of trying for a team with a handful of seniors, little depth,…

WAYNESBORO – It was bound to happen eventually. The Waynesboro Area Senior High School varsity golf team’s four-year reign in the Mid-Penn Colonial Division ended on Tuesday. But it was how it happened that belonged to the category of the “bizarre.” Waynesboro entered its previous meet down a match to Northern York. When the Polar Bears finished third in the competition and Waynesboro first, head coach Ryan Henderson’s team took over sole possession of the division lead. That meant all Waynesboro had to do was finish no lower than second in the event Northern won Tuesday’s meet at its home…

WAYNESBORO – The Waynesboro Maidens and Greencastle-Antrim Blue Devils were on their way to a potential scoreless tie and overtime in their Mid-Penn Colonial Division match at Buchanan Automotive Stadium. Neither team’s offense could do much past midfield, and when they did, they couldn’t find any glimpse of a scoring opportunity. While it might have come as a relief to the goalkeepers, who watched action unfold farther downfield, it was no doubt frustrating to players and coaches alike as teams played what amounted to kickball. Indeed, scoring isn’t exactly plentiful in soccer. But, when one team scores that first goal,…

WAYNESBORO – One less turnover. One less penalty. One – or two – more game-changing plays. Either of these may well have been the difference between a loss and a win for the struggling Waynesboro Indians varsity football team. In the end, a 49-yard touchdown run by Carter Coons was the difference, as the Greencastle-Antrim Blue Devils held off a determined Waynesboro team, 17-10, Friday night in a Mid-Penn Colonial Division game at Buchanan Automotive Stadium on Military Appreciation Night. Coons’ impressive run right through the Tribe defense with 4:13 left to play in the third period punctuated a Greencastle…

CHAMBERSBURG – It was guaranteed to be a pivotal Mid-Penn Colonial Division varsity golf competition. A Waynesboro loss and a Northern win would have all but clinched the league championship for the Polar Bears and an end to Waynesboro’s four-year dominance. A Waynesboro win would have clinched at least a tie for the division with one meet remaining – at Range End in Dillsburg. In a strange twist, Waynesboro did indeed win Tuesday’s meet at the par-73, 6,201-yard Chambersburg Country Club. But Northern finished third – behind Shippensburg – and head coach Ryan Henderson’s team jumped into first place. “We…

WAYNESBORO – The Waynesboro Area Senior High School varsity girls’ volleyball team got off to a 2-0 start to the 2023 season, winning matches at Shippensburg and Gettysburg. In those two contests, the Maidens won six of seven sets. They entered this week with home matches against two considerably more competitive teams, including Tuesday’s matchup against Greencastle-Antrim. Waynesboro was eager to put Monday’s 3-1 non-conference loss to South Western behind it, but the Blue Devils were too much to handle. Greencastle notched a sweep of the Blue Devils Mid-Penn Colonial Division match, winning by scores of 25-13, 25-18 and 25-20.…

CARLISLE – The back and forth continues between the Waynesboro and Northern York varsity golf teams. The scene shifted to Eagles Crossing Golf Club, a par-72, 6,475-yard course, in a Mid-Penn Colonial Division hosted by Big Spring. It was another two-team showdown as Waynesboro and Northern faced off with two more league meets to play. It wasn’t Waynesboro’s day. Head coach Ryan Henderson’s squad shot 16 strokes lower than the previous league competition. Northern also shot a bit lower than its potential but still beat Waynesboro head-to-head 334-343. Northern broke the first-place tie that stood after Waynesboro won last week’s…

WAYNESBORO – The thing about sports is that someone loses. The Waynesboro Indians varsity boys’ soccer team has had their share of ‘L’s’ lately. On Saturday, the Tribe lost to South Western, 5-2, in a non-conference matchup on a sunny, hot AM at Buchanan Automotive Stadium. The loss drops Waynesboro – which finished 2-16 a year ago – to 1-3, with a home match against Hershey coming up on Monday. “We made some mistakes,” said first-year head coach Corey Duesler after the contest. “We definitely gave them some opportunities in dangerous area than we should have. “I really feel like…

CHAMBERSBURG – In a game that featured spectacular individual plays and a gutsy defensive performance by the Waynesboro Indians, it was mistakes at bad times that ended up costing Waynesboro. Ethan Alldredge pulled in a pass from quarterback Rayshawn Frazer-Hewitt on the opposite sideline that drew the Tribe to within 27-20 and a real shot at coming from behind. The belief was there, and the corresponding effort backed up the team’s confidence – something that was probably tested after Waynesboro lost to Hershey 35-14 a week after defeating Spring Grove 21-3 in the season opener. But the Chambersburg Trojans made…

For the second time in three years, a Waynesboro Area Senior High School student-athlete will be visiting Happy Valley. Ethan Saunders, a 2020 WASHS graduate, is a senior on the University of Delaware football team. The 6-foot, 248-pounder who is majoring in Economics, plays on the defensive line for the Blue Hens. Saunders wasn’t too far away from another alum who played an outstanding game against Penn State during the 2021 season: Forrest Rhyne. Rhyne’s accolades drew raves from ESPN analyst Matt Millen, a Penn State legend who went on to enjoy a prosperous NFL career with the Los Angeles…
