ENOLA – What a difference a year made for the East Pennsboro varsity football team. The same can not be said for Waynesboro, who lost 38-12 to the Panthers on Friday on a hot and muggy late October night. The win gives East Pennsboro the Mid-Penn Colonial Division title and a 9-1 record. Waynesboro finished the season at 2-8. The Tribe defeated the Panthers in two overtimes a year ago, 13-10 in Waynesboro. The Indians once again struggled to gain traction on offense. That’s too bad because it has shown it can move the ball if it finds its rhythm.…

Don Jones loves a challenge. He’s embraced them his entire life: from learning how to wrestle as a youngster, how to survive the gauntlet that is the hospital management industry, how to change his career after watching someone sell shirts and apparel at a youth wrestling tournament, and, did I mention the part about wrestling? Yes, wrestling – freestyle wrestling, with its emphasis on throws and locked hands. “It kind of makes it more exciting,” said Jones of the rules in freestyle wrestling. “You can lock hands at any position. Double-leg takedowns are four points. There are five-point throws. Freestyle…

WAYNESBORO – It’s been said that the past determines the present and future. Waynesboro’s Bill Smith fits the aforementioned adage to a proverbial T. Born Willam Lamar Smith in 1934, Smith, who as a child was often called by his middle name before Bill became his permanent name, laid the groundwork for the future in the sport of wrestling. His legacy spans not only the high school wrestling program but also youth wrestling in the community. The 1960s was a decade that saw growth in scholastic athletics at Waynesboro High School. Boys’ soccer and baseball were added to the list…

WAYNESBORO – The Waynesboro Indians varsity football team scored 28 points in the first half. They scored three points in the second half. Visiting Mechanicsburg enjoyed a prosperous passing game, especially in the second half. The Wildcats rallied from deficits of 28-14 and 31-21 to defeat Waynesboro, 35-31 Friday night in a Mid-Penn Colonial Division game at Buchanan Automotive Stadium on Senior Night. The loss was especially tough to take for a Waynesboro team that looked like it was headed for its third win of the season. And it would have been a morale booster for the Tribe, which must play…

Davis, only a junior, scored three goals and notched an assist in Waynesboro’s 11-0 victory over Central Dauphin East on Tuesday. It’s something Davis has been doing since her freshman; and she carries over her high level of play into the next season. “I just want to stay humble,” said Davis after Tuesday’s match at Buchanan Automotive Stadium. “I couldn’t have done it without my teammates; so, I want to thank them, and my coaches. I didn’t expect to get it my…

GETTYSBURG – If you’re a believer in the football adage “the best defense is a good offense,” you would have been disappointed watching Friday night’s high-scoring high school varsity game between Waynesboro and Gettysburg. Honestly, it would have been nice if the outcome would have been like the 2020 classic won by the Indians 55-49 in overtime. However, let’s say that it wasn’t that Gettysburg had too much offense for a young and thin-on-depth Waynesboro squad that fell to 2-5 after absorbing a 49-34 Mid-Penn Colonial Division loss to the Warriors. In a series that began in 1919, it’s been…

WAYNESBORO – When the Mount St. Mary’s University men’s and women’s golf teams needed a new home golf course, Waynesboro Country Club’s Kenny Smith sprang into action. Smith saw the possibility of the teams using WCC as an opportunity for both the intercollegiate golf teams and the country club. “I went to the board – and a couple of folks here – and told them the Mount is only 25 minutes away. I think it would be good to give them privelages to play here. This was last year. When they left Quail Valley Golf Course (in Littlestown) last fall,…
