The Trojans finish their season with a 10-0 record, having outscored opponents 217-26 in the process. Chambersburg’s Pony squad also competed in a Super Bowl, falling 6-0 to Mechanicsburg. The Mid-Penn Conference announced its All-Star selections last week, and the selections were kind to Franklin County teams, with Waynesboro, Greencastle-Antrim, and Chambersburg all having at least one Player or Coach of the Year honoree. In all, we counted 56 All-Star selections from the Local.News coverage area. Waynesboro had 20 selections and was led by Kim Saunders, who was named the Coach of the Year in volleyball, and Nikki Davis, who nailed down Player of the Year honors in girls soccer. Other First Team selections for the Tribe include Jack Knepper (boys soccer), Lainey Peyton (girls soccer), and Jaeda Dockman…
Weather permitting, the local auto racing season is set to close out this weekend at BAPS Motor Speedway in York Haven. When that feature runs its course on Saturday, it’s on to the offseason for the drivers not traveling south for competition this winter. This seems like as good of a time as any to review the top drivers from the Local.News area during the 2024 season. Three track champions — Chambersburg’s Craig Myers, Waynesboro’s Tyler Horst, and Hagerstown’s Keith Reed — served as the cream of the crop for a group of 26 drivers that landed Top 10 points…

Months of practice, games and team bonding in the United Recreational Soccer League all built up to one final climax: The league’s end-of-season tournament. A trio of Waynesboro youth teams made it all the way to the finals of their respective tournaments, including a champion. Waynesboro Gold, a seventh- and eighth-grade co-ed team, played to a 3-5 record during the regular season, but Bruce Neterer’s squad found another gear at tournament time. The squad went 2-0 in pool play, before blasting off for the championship with three-goal victories over FC Frederick White and FC Frederick Blue. The Waynesboro Gladiators, a…
It’s been nearly a year since the Northern Patriots girls volleyball team last tasted defeat. That loss was a 3-1 heartbreaker, and it came at the worst possible time: In the MPSSAA state semifinals against North Hagerstown, a team that went on to win state gold. The Patriots have been hungry since that season-ending loss and it’s shown this fall, with the team not just winning, but making examples of all 18 opponents they’ve faced this year. Undefeated Northern garnered the No. 1 seed for this year’s state tourney and now it finds itself in a familiar spot: Facing the…
Linganore lived up to its top seed in the opening round of the 3A West Region Tournament, capitalizing on three turnovers to run away for victory over No. 8 South Hagerstown on Thursday evening. The undefeated Lancers (10-0) scored less than a minute into the game, when outside linebacker Noah Orndorff recovered a fumble in the end zone. Following the big play from Orndorff, who later recorded another fumble recovery, the rout was on. Linganore QB Shawn Pelovitz threw for 123 passing yards and three TDs, with two of those scoring strikes going to Chase Perry. Lancers running back Bradly…
With North Hagerstown’s Lauren Stine leading the way, runners from the Local.News coverage area were all over the podium at last weekend’s MPSSAA Cross Country Championships. Stine blitzed past the field in the 3A race to finish as state champion in 18:23, nearly 24 seconds faster than the runner-up. Stine’s Hubs finished sixth in the team race. Jupiter Schellhase, of South Hagerstown, also competed and finished 36th in 21:02. Another North Hagerstown runner, Walker Mason, had a big day in the boys race, finishing second in the state with his time of 16:04, guiding his team to a third-place finish…
