In most places, wrestling season is over and has been over for several weeks now. The singlets have been turned in and the mats have been stowed away.
But for grapplers in Franklin County and the surrounding area, it seems like the season is only just getting started.
Waynesboro rolled out the mats last weekend for the Middle Atlantic Wrestling Association District Tournament, a qualifier event that sends the Top 4 finishers from each weight class to the MAWA West Regional Tournament, set to be held on April 18-19 at Nittany Valley Sports Centre. Schools from the Local.News1.org coverage area crowned 23 champions, with the Tribe leading the way with 11.
Waynesboro got titles from Luke Swope (Bantam, 40), Noah Swope (Midget, 54), Ace Beltz (Midget, 62), Kristianna Kayhoe (Junior, 58), Freedom Young (Junior, 66), Caiden Fann (Junior, 82), Colton Ogburn (Intermediate, 120), Owen Hinkle (Intermediate, 120), Steven Howard (Elite, 140), Colton Biser (Elite, 145) and Wyatt Lowans (Elite, 160).
Greencastle returned home with five gold medals from Liam Dietrich (Junior, 120), Mychael Hebron (Intermediate, 175), Kevin Hoffpauir (Advanced, 115), Jackson Polifka (Advanced, 130) and Casey Glunt (Open, 295), while Chambersburg’s efforts on the mat produced four champs: Gabriel Creamer (Junior, 108), Hunter Johnson (Advanced, 120), Nathan Chambers (Advanced, 145) and Justin Deneen (Advanced, 152).
Hagerstown’s Logan Ardinger (Advanced, 100), Brendon Colbert (Open, 158) and Isaiah Brooks (Open, 190) also nailed down titles.
A handful of wrestlers ventured out to Messiah University last weekend for a Pennsylvania USA Wrestling qualifier. Chambersburg’s Frank Barrientos captured heavyweight titles in both the Freestyle and Greco-Roman divisions, while teammates Cody Seabolt (Greco-Roman) and Reagan Evans (Freestyle) also secured championships. Eli Hind, of Waynesboro, was a second-place finisher.
