CHAMBERSBURG – It’s too early to talk about a Mid-Penn Colonial Division championship.
But it’s not too early to point out that the Waynesboro Area Senior High School varsity golf team is two wins (or even high places) away from a repeat of a division title.
On Tuesday – a day later than scheduled – Waynesboro carded a collective score of 327 to finish 25 strokes ahead of runner-up Greencastle-Antrim to notch six wins. One-loss Waynesboro improved to 29-1, four matches ahead of Greencastle (25-5) with two league meets remaining.
The first of those meets took place Wednesday at Gettysburg National Golf Club and hosted by Gettysburg.
The final regular season meet is slated for Monday, Sept. 19 when Northern York hosts its fellow Mid-Penn Colonial Division teams at Range End Golf Course.
“I’m still very impressed with Tyler (Fortney’s) play,” said Waynesboro coach Ryan Henderson. “Evan (Stein) and Kellan (Smith) have proven to be great contributors to the team as well. Andrew Soffe broke 90 for the first time. That is quite an accomplishment on a very difficult golf course.”
Fortney led the way not just for Waynesboro’s golfers but the rest of the field. He came into the clubhouse with a score of 75. Stein was third overall with 81. Smith was fourth overall with 82.
Soffe rounded out Waynesboro’s top four scorers with an 89.
Greencastle’s Cooper Swam turned in a 79 to finish second among all golfers. Teammate Levi Tennison was fifth overall with 85, while Zachary Slaybaugh finished with 88 to place eighth overall.
Shippensburg finished third in the team standings, followed by Gettysburg, Big Spring, Northern and James Buchanan.
Shippensburg’s Mason Fogelsonger was sixth overall with 86. Big Spring’s Josh Motter was seventh at 88.
