ORRTANNA – Mister Ed’s Elephant Museum, a beloved roadside attraction on the historic Lincoln Highway, marked its 50th anniversary this week with the unveiling of a stunning new mural. The seven-panel, 28-foot-wide artwork, painted by more than 200 community members under the direction of artist Michael Allison, was revealed during a festive ribbon-cutting ceremony that drew crowds of fans, friends and local dignitaries.
Founded in 1975 by Ed and Pat Gotwalt, Mister Ed’s has grown from a quirky general store into a unique destination featuring thousands of elephant figurines, a candy emporium and whimsical outdoor displays. The museum’s origins trace back to a single carved elephant received as a wedding gift, which sparked a lifelong passion for collecting and entertaining.
The new mural, which now graces the museum’s exterior, captures the rich history of Mister Ed’s, from its humble beginnings to its current status as a multi-generational family business. The dedication date, May 20, was chosen to honor the late Ed Gotwalt’s birthday, making the celebration especially poignant for his family and the community.
The event was a testament to the museum’s enduring appeal, drawing visitors of all ages who marveled at the mural and reminisced about their favorite Mister Ed’s memories. As the museum embarks on its next 50 years, the spirit of fun, family, and elephants remains as strong as ever.
