We hate to break the news, but the Michael Phelan watch has come to an end.
Fairfield’s Phelan — one of the top boys soccer goals scorers in the nation — scored three goals in the final game of his career, a 5-4 loss to New Covenant in the opening round of the District 3-1A postseason. He finished his season with 60 goals, which ranks No. 1 in the LocalNews1.org coverage area, No. 2 in the state and No. 7 in the country.
If it’s any consolation to Knights fans, the girls soccer team is still going strong with Gemma Phelan leading the way. Phelan tops our charts in both goals (35) and assists (14), while her team leads local squads in scoring offense (4.05 goals per game) and defense (0.65). It should come as no surprise that Fairfield will be playing for a district championship this week.
On the gridiron, Chambersburg QB Cam Green put his aerial talents on full display in last week’s season finale against Bishop McDevitt, the No. 2-ranked Class 6A program in the state. The Trojans lost the game, and saw their campaign come to an end, but Green finishes his season as our area’s clubhouse leader in both passing yards (1,414) and TDs (15). Green’s favorite target, Jashaun Palmer, currently leads locals in receiving yards (649).
North Hagerstown’s Michael Stewart became the area’s first running back to cross 1,000 yards, and he did it in nine games. Stewart’s teammate, Donald Rivers, easily leads the area with 130 tackles, averaging more than 14 per game.
On the volleyball court, South Hagerstown’s Reilly Foley celebrated 500 career kills (and counting), while Chambersburg’s Kasey Moser (190) and Olivia Shearer (189) closed out their season by taking over the top two spots on our kills list. North Hagerstown’s Aleah Merrbaugh ranks No. 1 among LN1 athletes in digs (264), while South’s Tenley Yost holds a commanding lead in blocks (52).
The field hockey season is a wrap for local teams as the only squad to qualify for the postseason, Greencastle-Antrim, went down in the opening round. The Blue Devils swept all top spots on our leaderboards, including scoring offense (2.64 goals per game) and defense (1.53), while Greencastle’s Natalie Medina (21 goals) and Sydnee Bosko (11 assists) finished as the area leaders in their respective events.
Finally, our boys cross country leaderboards have a new 5K leader. Chambersburg’s Boston Vincenti takes over the top spot after running a 15:54.56 at the District 3-3A Championships.
Our fall sports leaderboard is based on stats for the seven teams in the LocalNews1.org coverage area — Waynesboro, Greencastle-Antrim, Chambersburg, Fairfield, North Hagerstown, South Hagerstown, and Smithsburg — that have been reported to maxpreps.com, athletic.net, penntrackxc.com, and directly to LN1.
