The cross country postseason is set to kick off this Friday with the Central Maryland Conference Championships, and it couldn’t come sooner for the North Hagerstown girls and Smithsburg boys, who have grown quite accustomed to winning team championships on the invitational scene this fall.
The Hubs and Leopards added yet another feather in the proverbial cap last week, with the squads conquering the Don Stoner Invitational, held at Smithsburg.
North Hagerstown’s girls treated the invite like a dual meet, sweeping the Top 5 spots with sharp 5K finishes from Mackenzie Philp (1st in 19:19.0), Caroline Philp (2nd in 19:23.6), Anna Ramanan (3rd in 21:15.3), Anabelle Myers (4th in 23:26.4) and Charlee Hajel (5th in 23:35.8). As for the Smithsburg boys, they claimed the team title on the strength of top-five finishes from Grayson Wynkoop (1st in 16:42.5), Dylan Herbst (2nd in 17:03.1) and Gavin Gross (4th in 18:06.4).
Two other teams from Smithsburg had a big week on the gridiron. The Leopards improved to 6-0 on the football field with a 56-0 rout over Clear Spring, while Smithsburg’s girls flag football squad also faced the Blazers, and came away with a 20-0 shutout.
Greencastle-Antrim has been heating up in multiple sports. The Blue Devils boys soccer team had an unbeaten week and is on a three-game points streak, while the field hockey squad extended its winning streak to four games by pasting last week’s opponents by a combined 11-1 score.
On the girls soccer pitch, Fairfield sprung a significant 1-0 upset over New Oxford, the leader in the South Central Athletic Conference Division II and one of the top-eight teams in the District 3-3A power rankings.
Finally, Waynesboro’s volleyball team has once again taken over sole possession of first place in the Mid-Penn Colonial Division after turning away both Shippensburg and Greencastle last week.
Below is a sport-by-sport look at how teams in the Local.News1 coverage area performed last week:
