It’s a good time to be a fan of the North Hagerstown Hubs.
North had a sharp week in just about every athletic arena. The boys (3-0-1) and girls (4-0) soccer teams are off to undefeated starts, while the girls volleyball squad has kicked off its season with a 3-1 record.
The Hubs also picked up their first win on the football field last week, while North golfers Delaney Fuss and Tristan Stiffler both shot 84s at the Central Maryland Conference Championship. Also at the CMC Championship, Smithsburg’s Ben Kirchner fired a 77 to finish eighth overall and as Washington County’s top golfer.
Much like their Maryland counterparts, the Blue Devils at Greencastle-Antrim are making an impact across multiple sports, as the school’s boys soccer, field hockey, and girls volleyball programs all control at least a share of first place in the Mid-Penn Colonial Division.
Football has been a strength for Smithsburg in the early season, as the flag and tackle squads are both off to 3-0 starts. Another group of Leopards — the defending MPSSAA Class 1A champion boys cross country squad — flexed their muscle at the Mountain Bash. Smithsburg captured the team title and got top-five finishes from Dylan Herbst (2nd in 16:37.6), Grayson Wynkoop (3rd in 17:08.3) and Gavin Gross (5th in 17:29.7).
Chambersburg girls cross country runner Natalie Quinn had a breakthrough race at the Ben Bloser Invitational at Big Spring. Quinn clocked an 18:29.2 to finish fifth in the Class 3A field of 355 runners.
Finally, Fairfield wraps up its regular season on the golf course as co-champions of South Central Athletic Conference Division III after posting a 50-6 record this fall.
