Combine the cross country course at Big Spring High School — home of the Mid-Penn Conference and District 3 Championships — with the rich running program at Chambersburg, and you’ve got a recipe for some smoking-fast times.
This gasoline-and-fire combination produced yet another monster performance in Newville last weekend at the Ben Bloser Invitational. Natalie Quinn’s time of 18:29.2 not only obliterated her PR, it made her the fastest Trojan runner to complete the course at Big Spring, and that includes postseason races.
It should come as no surprise that Quinn now tops our girls leaderboards by more than a minute and a half. Her time would even put her within striking distance of our boys Top 10 list.
Speaking of those boys runners, area leader and Smithsburg distance ace Dylan Herbst expanded his lead over the LocalNews1.org coverage area last week by running a 16:37.6 at the Mountain Bash. He leads by nearly 25 seconds over Chambersburg’s Liam Coy, who ran a 17:02.8 at the Bloser Invite.
On the soccer pitch, North Hagerstown’s girls are off to an unbeaten start. The Hubs lead the area in scoring offense (5.0 goals per game) and defense (0.25), and boast the area’s No. 2 scorer in Emerson Kelly, who has netted eight goals in four games. Normally, that would be enough to top our leaderboards, but Fairfield’s Gemma Phelan has set the bar at 12 goals.
Another Fairfield soccer star — Michael Phelan — has been unstoppable. Even with just four of seven games reported, with 19 goals unaccounted for, Phelan still leads our coverage area with 14 goals, more than twice as many as the No. 2 player on our list. He recorded five of those goals in one game last week to fuel a 6-1 win over James Buchanan.
In field hockey, no area team is stroking the ball better than Greencastle-Antrim, as the Blue Devils lead locals in team offense (2.86 goals per game) and defense (1.29). Natalie Medina leads the area with six assists, and has posted six goals to share the top spot on our list with teammate Rowan Shubert.
Another Greencastle standout, Jordyn Wagner, continues to pump out some of the area’s best volleyball numbers. She leads locals with 93 kills, while also ranking top five in blocks (17), aces (10) and digs (58).
Last but not least, North Hagerstown’s Michael Stewart has flipped our football leaderboards upside down. Following a juggernaut performance to guide the Hubs to their first win of the season, Stewart now leads the area in both rushing yards (355) and TDs (4). He’s on top of the mountain, despite playing one game less than his Pennsylvania counterparts on our list.
