CARLISLE, Pa. — A high-profile national security summit unfolding just north of Franklin County is expected to bring increased attention, and traffic , to the region this week.
U.S. Sen. Dave McCormick (R-Pittsburgh) is hosting the two-day Pennsylvania Defense and Innovation Summit at the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle on July 14-15. The event is drawing top federal officials, military leaders and executives from major defense and technology companies, with former President Donald Trump scheduled to headline Wednesday.
Local residents, commuters and businesses in Franklin County may feel the ripple effects of the summit, particularly with increased travel along key corridors into Cumberland County and heightened regional visibility tied to defense industry discussions.
The summit opens Tuesday with an “Industry Day” focused on strengthening ties between private companies, government agencies and the military. Panels will examine defense contracting, workforce development and collaboration opportunities for Pennsylvania-based businesses.
A trade show highlighting companies involved in the state’s defense supply chain is also part of the opening day, offering potential exposure for regional manufacturers and contractors.
Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is expected to deliver a keynote address addressing the future of the U.S. military and Pennsylvania’s role in national defense production.
Programming shifts Wednesday to national security and emerging technologies, including advanced manufacturing sectors that have growing relevance for south-central Pennsylvania’s workforce and economic development efforts. Trump is scheduled to deliver keynote remarks to close the summit.
McCormick said the gathering is designed to position Pennsylvania as a leader in defense innovation while fostering partnerships that could bring investment and job opportunities to communities across the state.
“Pennsylvania has the resources and workforce to lead the next generation of defense manufacturing,” McCormick said in a statement.
The speaker lineup includes several prominent national figures, including CIA Director John Ratcliffe, Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, Air Force Secretary Troy Meink and Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday.
Business leaders scheduled to appear include JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, Lockheed Martin CEO James Taiclet, Northrop Grumman CEO Kathy Warden, General Dynamics CEO Phebe Novakovic and Arm CEO Rene Haas.
Traffic impacts
Motorists traveling between Franklin and Cumberland counties should plan for delays throughout the summit.
North Middleton Township officials have announced multiple road restrictions near Carlisle Barracks:
- Post Road is closed through the morning of July 16.
- Claremont Road will have intermittent restrictions during peak morning and evening hours on both days of the summit.
While local access will remain available, officials warn that additional traffic controls may be implemented Wednesday if congestion increases.
Drivers are encouraged to allow extra travel time and consider alternate routes, particularly during commuting hours.
