Simply put, the H-Town Rollerz are on a roll.
The Rollerz, a club track squad based in Hagerstown, put on a superb performance at the AAU Maryland District Qualifier, a meet that was held at Marriotts Ridge High School and drew nearly 50 teams. Four boys — Dru Kennedy (8U), Jader “JJ” Davis (10), Delontay Lloyd Smith (10), and Kareem Walton (15-16) — all earned wins, as did girls competitors Khloe Melton (9) and Saharah Hassane (15-16).
Kennedy was sniffing for gold all day long. He triumphed over the field of 42 runners in the 400 (1:07.68) and added runner-up finishes in the 100 (14.34) and 200 (29.88). Davis posted a win in the high jump (3-8), while Lloyd Smith recorded a victory in the javelin (69-7) and a third-place finish in the shot put (23-8.25). As for Walton, he won the high jump with a leap of 5-10, and placed fourth in the 100 in 11.23.
Melton dominated the sprints, taking gold in the 100 (14.42), silver in the 400 (1:12.23), and bronze in the 200 (30.43). Hassane shined in the throws with a win the shot put (31-11.5) and a runner-up finish in the discus (94-4).
Javion Simms, competing in the boys 9-year-old division, registered podium finishes in the 200 (2nd in 29.57), 100 (3rd in 14.17), and 400 (1:07.09). Another standout sprinter for the Rollerz, 11-year-old Jurnee Simms, collected Top 5 finishes in the girls 200 (3rd in 27.37), 400 (3rd in 1:01.97), and 100 (4th in 13.30).
Finally, Annapoorna Ramanan put in some long mileage at the qualifier. Competing in the 17-18 girls division, Ramanan took second in the 3,000 (11:26.04) and third in the 1,500 (5:20.66).
The Top 16 finishers from each event advance to compete at the AAU Region 3 Qualifier, set to held at Morgan State University this weekend.
