Inmate found dead in Hagerstown prison cell

HAGERSTOWN, Md. — A Maryland inmate serving time for the 2013 killing of his infant niece was found dead inside his prison cell late Wednesday at Roxbury Correctional Institution in Hagerstown, according to Maryland State Police.

Colin Wolf, 32, of Bel Air, was discovered unresponsive in his cell at about 11:15 p.m. May 20. Emergency medical personnel responded to the prison but pronounced him dead at the scene.

Maryland State Police said homicide investigators were called after authorities determined Wolf’s cellmate was inside the cell at the time of the incident. The cellmate has been identified as a suspect, but investigators have not released the inmate’s name because charges are pending.

Wolf’s body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore, where an autopsy will be conducted to determine the official cause and manner of death.

The investigation began with the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services’ Internal Investigative Unit before being turned over to the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit, which is leading the case. State police crime scene technicians and corrections investigators are assisting.

Once investigators complete their findings, the case will be submitted to the Washington County state’s attorney’s office for review and possible charges.

Wolf was serving a life sentence, with all but 30 years suspended, after pleading guilty in 2015 to first-degree murder in the death of his 2-month-old niece, Aubree Roberts.

According to court records and investigators, paramedics were called to a Harford County home in April 2013 after the infant suffered severe injuries. The child was transported to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, where she later died.

Investigators said Wolf had been left alone with the infant and became angry with his sister because of her relationship with the child’s father. Authorities said Wolf sprayed cologne into the baby’s mouth and punched her in the face, causing a fatal brain hemorrhage.

The death marks the second inmate homicide investigation at Roxbury Correctional Institution this month.

Earlier in May, inmate Kelvin Hite was found dead inside his cell at the prison. Authorities also identified another inmate as the suspected attacker in that case.

The investigation into Wolf’s death remains ongoing.
