Foot notes: Sub-2 lightning strikes twice at London Marathon

John Korir, of Kenya, breaks the tape to win the Boston Marathon on Monday. (Charles Krupa / Associated Press)

When Kenyan John Korir broke the tape at the Boston Marathon in a course-record time of 2:01:52, it provided affirmation for a thought that has lingered in my mind for years: A sub-2 marathon is most certainly within reach.

My hope has been to witness this inevitable athletic marvel within my lifetime. Turns out I didn’t need to wait that long.

Just one week later, the mythical time barrier was broken at the London Marathon. Twice.

Sebastian Sawe, of Kenya, crossed the finish line in 1:59:30 to shatter the world record of 2:00:35 set in 2023 by the late Kelvin Kiptum.

The fantastical record is amplified even more by the fact that the race runner-up, Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha, also broke two hours in 1:59:41. Third-place finisher Jacob Kiplimo also broke Kiptum’s record with a time of 2:00:28.

It’s hard to wrap my head around this. To compare the historical significance of this sports moment, just imagine Joe DiMaggio’s 56-game hitting streak or Wilt Chamberlin’s 100-point game. Now think about those milestones happening on the same night. That’s how unthinkable the events were in London last weekend.

Truth really is stranger than fiction.

This is a race that running fans, and even sports followers in general, should be talking about for years to come. Sawe’s heroics will always be remembered, but I believe I’ll find myself thinking more about the debut marathon of the runner-up, who said himself that a sub-2 marathon was impossible. I can’t decide if I should feel happy about Kejelcha’s other-worldly achievement or sad for him for losing with a time that would have literally won any other marathon in the world’s history. For the record, all accounts online say that Kejelcha is thrilled with his achievement.

Naturally we are left to wonder what will happen next. What will become of Sawe and Kejelcha? Will the sub-2 marathon never happen again, or will it become the norm in elite distance running? How much lower can we go?

These are all questions I can ponder the next time I go for a long run, although I can’t guarantee I’ll be finished within two hours.

And finally, a shoutout to Chambersburg’s Jeffrey Stone, who was a Top 10 finisher at the General Smallwood Olympic Triathlon in Marbury, Md. Stone clocked a 2:26:27 to finish ninth in the field of 193 athletes.
