When it came to honoring the best girls basketball talent in Washington County, there was no denying Smithsburg, one of the best teams in Maryland.
The Leopards were all over the Washington County Athletic Association All-Star team, which was released earlier this week.
Smithsburg garnered 12 total public school selections and was named as the Team of the Year following a 26-1 season that saw the Leopards advance all the way to the state semifinals. Todd Bono was named Coach of the Year, while Skyla Mastronardi double-dipped as both the Player and Senior of the Year. Jenna Todd secured Newcomer of the Year honors.
Four Leopards landed on the Public School First Team: Mastronardi, Claire Bono, Jayda Tyler and Kara Hoover.
Mastronardi and Bono both averaged more than 17 points per game, while Tyler (8.9 ppg) and Hoover (8.8 ppg) were also key contributors.
North and South Hagerstown each had six All-Star selections, with the Rebels’ Aniyah Freeman being named a First Teamer and Defensive Player of the Year. South Hagerstown’s Khloe Terralonge was named the Freshman of the Year.
The WCAA’s All-Star selections for public school boys basketball were kind to North Hagerstown, a squad that qualified for the Class 3A Regional Championship for a second-straight season after knocking off No. 1-seeded Oakdale. The Hubs were named the Co-Team of the Year alongside Williamsport, while Nate Naylor was named Co-Coach of the Year. Brayden Cespedes picked up two big honors, as he was named the Junior of the Year and the Most Improved Player. Brock Lapole was picked as Freshman of the Year. Cespedes, who poured in 22.4 points and 5.7 rebounds per game, was named to the First Team, as was teammate Joey Dorsey (20.4 ppg, 6.9 rpg).
Smithsburg picked up eight honors, with Jacob Tyler leading the way as a First Team selection and Senior of the Year. Led by First Teamer Avery Cosley, South Hagerstown racked up six All-Star selections.
