McHENRY, Md. – Smithsburg’s Rileigh Romberger is starting to walk the walk again.
The Leopards’ 120-pound wrestler has already one state championship. Now she will be trying to make it a pair.
Romberger, the defending state champion, won the 120-pound title at the Class 2A-1A West Region tournament at Garrett Community College in McHenry, Maryland, to punch her ticket for next weekend’s state meet.
Romberger is one of three Washington County girls to win a region title and one of six Smithsburg girls to finish in the top four in the regional to advance. Eighteen county wrestler – including 12 girls – will vie for state titles at Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, beginning Thursday.
Six of the girls’ wrestling dozen will represent Smithsburg.
Boonsboro’s Sarah Mohler and Williamsport’s Laicey Durham joined Romberger as region champions.
The undefeated Romberger won her three matches, using a pin and a tech fall to win two of them, to sweep to the title. Mohler (145 pounds) and Durham (100) also swept their three matches.
Smithsburg’s Emmaleigh Mentzer (115) scored a second-place finish. Bella Cox (130) and Samantah Nieman (170) advanced with third-place finishes. Kendall Crutchfield (110) and Lilliannah Mentzer (115) qualified with by taking fourth place.
Boonsboro will be sending three girls to the state meet as McKenna Greene (105) and Lucy Lawson (130) each finished fourth and will join Mohler for the Warriors.
Ella Rechtorovic (190) finished second and Emma Paul (125) took third to round out the three girls who will represent Williamsport.
For the boys, Boonsboro will send two boys to the state meet while Williamsport has one representative.
Luke Bucheimer (113) and J.T. Griffith (215) with represent the Warriors and Ben Kaetzel (190) with be competing for the Wildcats.
Three wrestlers – two from South Hagerstown and one from North Hagerstown – will be representing the county in the Class 4A-3A state tournament. They advanced with their top-four finishes at the West Region meet at Seneca Valley High School in Germantown, Maryland.
Logan Ardinger (106) finished third and Paul Ngolle (157) took fourth for the Rebels, while Quinn Chomor (140) took fourth for the Hubs.

Luke Lesinger led South Hagerstown with 18 points, four steals and three assists as the fifth-seeded Rebels were eliminated in the quarterfinal round of the Maryland State Basketball Tournament by No. 3 Urbana.
Naz Mitchell finished with 12 points and three assists for South.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
Shepherd 87, Bloomsburg 44
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Guard Elwyne Wordlaw scored a game-high 18 points to lead Shepherd University to a win over Bloomsburg in PSAC East contest to cap Senior Day festivities.
Wordlaw hit 9-of-15 shots, including three 3-pointers, to top the Rams (19-9, 16-6).
Guard Marcus Banks and forward Daouda Traore added 14 points for Shepherd. Banks also collected six rebounds, and six assists.
Guard Colby White had 13 points and six boards, while guard Brody Davis had 11 points and six rebounds. Sophomore Favor Okigweh had a game-high nine rebounds.
Naaeem Purnell-Northern had 10 points for the Huskies (7-21, 4-18).
Shepherd had a 46-29 advantage at halftime.
Before the game, Shepherd honored senior guard Asher Rudolph.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Bloomsburg 67, Shepherd 66
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Maddie LaFrance scored a team-high 20 points to lead Bloomsburg to a 67-66 victory over Shepherd University on Saturday in PSAC East matchup on Senior Day.
Shepherd (11-15, 9-12) had a 44-32 lead at halftime behind 17 first-half points from guard Kara Wehner.
The Rams led by as many as 15 points in the third quarter, but Bloomsburg rallied to within a point at 66-65 with 1:24 left in the contest after a three-pointer by LaFrance. Kelly Leszcynski hit a jumper with 45 seconds remaining to provide the margin of victory for the Huskies.
Wehner poured in a game-high 25 points to pace the Rams. She added seven rebounds and four assists. Wehner connected on 10-of-19 shots, including four three-pointers.
Forward Lamaria Estridge added 10 points, six boards, and three steals. Guard Cassidy Rhodes scored nine points.
Ava Stevenson added 14 points for the Huskies (15-14, 11-10).
Shepherd honored seniors Leah Snisky and Kelly Ours in a ceremony before the game.
COLLEGE BASEBALL
Shepherd 9, Fairmont 4
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Outfielder Brodie Pullen went 3-for-4 with three runs and an RBI to lead the Shepherd University to a victory over Fairmont State on Saturday.
Pullen and infielder Ryan Fluharty gave the Rams (8-3) the early 2-0 lead with a pair of RBI singles.
Fairmont State took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third.
The Rams plated two in the fifth when Pullen singled and scored on a wild pitch and Fluharty walked and later scored on a fielder’s choice.
But the Falcons tied the game at 4-4 in the sixth.
Shepherd scored five runs in the ninth to pull away for the win. Fluharty and catcher Austin Sofran each had two-run singles to highlight the inning.
Pitcher Logan Bower fired three innings, allowing one run on two hits to get the win.
