High School Scores and Standings from Jan. 12-18

The indoor track and field postseason began on an exciting note for the Smithsburg boys and North Hagerstown girls, who each captured team titles at the Washington County Public Schools Championships, hosted by Hagerstown Community College on Friday.

The Leopards outmuscled the Hubs for the boys title, with Camilo Mellott (800), Dylan Herbst (1,600), Michael Wynkoop (3,200), and Cadyn Nesbitt (pole vault) all winning their respective events. Smithsburg’s 4×800 relay team of Charles Higgins, Dylan Lowe, Luke Gentzel, and Gavin Gross also captured a county championship. North Hagerstown’s Isaiah Seering captured individual gold in the 55, while also guiding the Hubs to victory in the 4×200. Torin Sitter, of South Hagerstown, won the 300 and was a member of the Rebels’ championship 4×400 squad.

On the girls side, the Hubs won six events on their path to the team title. Mackenzie Philp surged to victory in both the 800 and 1,600, while teammates Taraji Nartey (300), Caroline Philp (1,600), and Anna Chamberlin (high jump) each earned individual wins of their own. North also got a county championship from its 4×400 team of Harmony Griffith, Brianna Mathews, Chamberlin, and Nartey. South Hagerstown’s Trinity Savage conquered the 55 and was the anchor for the Rebels’ winning 4×200 relay squad.

Chambersburg’s boys basketball team extended its winning streak to six games after going 3-0 last week. The Trojans clipped Harrisburg (75-74) and dispatched Commonwealth Division contender Cumberland Valley (60-46), before capping off their week with a 58-42 triumph over Penn Wood. Chambersburg is now tied with Cumberland Valley for second in the division.

Another local boys hoops squad, Greencastle-Antrim, saw its lead in the Colonial Division shrink with a loss to Northern York. The Blue Devils still control the division with an 8-1 record, but don’t count out the Polar Bears (7-2) and East Pennsboro (6-3) just yet.

On the girls hardwood, Smithsburg rolled to yet another blowout victory. The undefeated Leopards (12-0) have outscored opponents by 372 points this winter.

Moving to the swimming pool, Chambersburg’s boys went 2-0 with wins over Hershey (86-84) and Gettysburg (64-30).

Finally, Greencastle-Antrim’s girls wrestling team placed eight wrestlers in the Top 6 at the Octorara Invitational. Aniuta Pavlii took second at 106 pounds to lead the Blue Devils.

Below is a sport-by-sport look at how teams in the Local.News1 coverage area performed last week:
