WAYNESBORO – The Waynesboro Volunteer Fire Department drew crowds Saturday, Oct. 18, for its annual open house, blending family-friendly activities with fire safety education and a poignant tribute to Sgt. Brian Starliper, a dedicated firefighter who died Oct. 14.
The event, held at the department’s station at 101825 Virginia Ave., featured a bounce house for children, fire truck rides and a junior firefighter challenge that tested young participants’ agility and teamwork. Attendees sampled barbecue from Fat Russ BBQ, mingling under clear skies as volunteers demonstrated hands-on training with fire extinguishers and smoke detectors.
Adding to the day’s highlights, a WellSpan WellFlight medical helicopter touched down at the landing pad across from Waynesboro Hospital, thrilling onlookers with a close-up view of emergency air operations.
Beneath the festivities, the department honored Starliper, a life member since 1987 who rose through the ranks as captain, sergeant and lieutenant. His fire helmet hung solemnly from the front of the firehall, while his name was etched on the door of the truck he once drove. Starliper also served as lieutenant with the Mont Alto Volunteer Fire Department and held roles with Blue Ridge Fire and Rescue and the South Mountain Volunteer Fire Department.
Volunteers emphasized the importance of home safety checks, urging families to test smoke alarms monthly and keep extinguishers accessible.
The open house underscored the department’s dual mission: fostering community ties while remembering those who gave their all. As dusk fell, families departed with goody bags of safety tips, helmets bobbing in the cooling air.
