5 things to do this weekend

Train enthusiasts can get their engines going at the Hagerstown Model Railroad Museum’s annual Open House, where miniature locomotives steal the spotlight. The free event will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, at Antietam Station, 17230 Shepherdstown Road in Sharpsburg, Maryland. Visitors can explore detailed model train layouts and station displays while learning about the history and artistry behind the museum’s collections.

All aboard for mystery and movie snacks at Coyle Free Library’s Tweens & Teens Movie Night. The library invites youth to the Teen Lounge from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, for a showing of Murder on the Orient Express. The free event includes snacks and a cinematic escape as part of the library’s ongoing teen programming.

There’s no chance of melting at this wintry craft adventure. Children ages 3 to 10 are invited to the downtown Hagerstown library for the Kids Discover/Little Explorers STEM program to create their own Snowman Suncatchers on Saturday, Jan. 17, from 11 a.m. to noon in the Storytime Room. The hands-on workshop offers young learners a bright way to explore science, art and creativity during the chilly season.

Nothing melts the winter chill like candles and cookies. The Vintage Flame Candles and Beehive Cookie Co. are teaming up for a Cookies and Candles workshop at noon Saturday at 26 W. Main St. in Waynesboro. Guests will pour their own candles and decorate snowman and knit hat cookies that are almost too cute to eat, blending creativity and coziness for the first class of the new year. Tickets are $45 here.

Love and wit go head-to-head as Potomac Playmakers brings Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew” to life at the Performing Arts Center, 17303 W. Washington St., Hagerstown. The comedic battle of the sexes plays out Saturday with performances at 3 and 8 p.m., and Sunday at 3 p.m. Tickets cost $15 to $20 and are available at potomacplaymakers.org. Audiences can expect sharp banter, bold characters and Shakespeare’s timeless take on love, power and persuasion.
