3 UPMC hospitals in Central PA named among 2026 best for maternity care

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Magee-Women’s at UPMC Carlisle, UPMC Harrisburg and UPMC Lititz have achieved the highest distinction as a 2026 High Performing hospital for Maternity Care from U.S. News & World Report. Each year, nearly 25,000 babies are born in UPMC hospitals that provide obstetric care, highlighting UPMC’s reputation as a reliable choice for families who want top-quality maternity services.

“This honor reflects the commitment of our talented physicians, nurses, and team members who deliver exceptional maternity care and compassionate support to families across central Pennsylvania,” said David Gibbons, senior vice president, UPMC Health Services Division and president, regional market. “Our goal is to continue to provide world-class care and create an outstanding experience for every patient as they welcome their newborns. It’s a privilege to share in these special moments.”

UPMC Carlisle, UPMC Harrisburg and UPMC Lititz earned a High Performing designation in recognition of maternity care as measured by factors such as C-section rates in lower-risk pregnancies, severe unexpected newborn complication rates, exclusive breast milk feeding rates and birthing-friendly practices, among other measures.

U.S. News began evaluating maternity care hospitals in 2021, rating hospitals that provide labor and delivery services and submit detailed data to the publication for analysis. For the 2026 edition, approximately 900 hospitals nationwide submitted maternity data for evaluation.

UPMC Carlisle also received the Maternity Care Access Hospital designation. Now in its third year, the Maternity Care Access Hospital designation recognizes essential hospitals serving communities that would otherwise be in danger of becoming maternity care deserts if they were to stop providing crucial maternity care services.

U.S. News evaluated approximately 900 hospitals nationwide for the 2026 ratings, and just 147 hospitals – or 16% of all evaluated hospitals – have been designated as Maternity Care Access Hospitals. Hospitals were evaluated based on detailed data submitted to U.S. News via the annual Maternity Services Survey.

This recognition empowers expectant parents to make informed choices about their maternity care, ensuring they receive the highest standard of service for their growing families.

UPMC Magee-Womens provides the state’s largest network of top-rated maternity care. For more information about UPMC Magee-Womens services in central Pennsylvania, readers may visit UPMC.com/CentralPaWomen.
