WAYNESBORO — As the new school year approaches, the Waynesboro Area YMCA has announced a new initiative aimed at middle school students.

The Middle School Engagement program is designed to address the unique social and physical needs of adolescents in a safe environment after the school day ends. It aims especially to address national statistics that show one in five middle schoolers lack supervision after the class day.

The program offers a variety of activities tailored for students aged 13 and older, ensuring they remain active and engaged during critical after-school hours. Key features of the program include:

  • Study & Homework Time: Dedicated time for students to focus on their academic responsibilities.
  • Social Time & Snack: Opportunities for students to interact and build friendships in a relaxed setting.
  • Life Skill Activities: Programs that foster essential life skills, preparing students for future challenges.
  • Physical Fitness: Activities that promote health and wellness, including access to group fitness classes and the wellness center.

The program operates Monday through Friday, from after school until 5:30 p.m. Students will meet at the middle school and will be escorted to the YMCA, ensuring a safe transition.

According to the YMCA of the USA, the lack of supervision after school can hinder students’ academic success. The Waynesboro Area YMCA seeks to fill this gap by providing a nurturing environment that supports the social, emotional, physical and academic growth of middle school students. The program emphasizes a balanced approach to youth development, incorporating academic support, physical activities and STEM programming.

Financial assistance is available to ensure that every child has the opportunity to participate. Registration is currently open at the Member Service Desk, with a fee of $50.

The Waynesboro Area YMCA aims to create a community where youngsters can thrive, emphasizing the importance of a safe and enriching after-school environment.
