HARRISBURG- The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is reminding travelers that the northbound Interstate 81 Welcome Center, located about a mile north of the Maryland state line in Franklin County, will be closed next week, June 3-7, so the facility’s current heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system can be replaced with an energy efficient system.
The Welcome Center parking area also will be closed.
The next available rest area on northbound I-81 is located just north of Exit 37 (Route 233/Newville).
This work is a Guaranteed Energy Savings Act (GESA) project, initiated by PennDOT and the Department of General Services in 2021. GESA projects upgrade heating, ventilation, air conditioning and lighting systems to improve energy efficiency in buildings and decrease growing energy costs. These upgrades significantly reduce energy usage which result in decreased utility spending.
