Fall is just around the corner, so numerous back-to-school events are scheduled around the area.
As summer winds to a close, schools want their students to feel comfortable returning to class. Tours of the building, meet-and-greet sessions with the faculty and other special events will help both new and returning students get settled in to a new schedule.
While not every school has announced when any open houses or other events will be, more will be coming as we get closer to the new school year. Please check with your local school and the LocalNews1.org website for more detailed information.
Elementary schools in the Waynesboro Area School District all host incoming kindergartners on the evening of Aug. 12, while students grades 1 through 5 are welcome the following Thursday, Aug. 14, for their orientation.
Waynesboro Area Middle School offers incoming sixth graders tours of the building on Aug. 5, 6 and 7, opening up for seventh and eighth graders the following Wednesday, Aug. 13.
Waynesboro Area Senior High School hosts its open house on Aug. 12.
All Waynesboro Area School District schools’ first day will be Aug. 19.
All Greencastle-Antrim School District schools’ first day will be Aug. 21.
The Chambersburg Area School District is hosting a new event called Kindergarten Kickstart for incoming kindergartners to explore school buildings and meet teachers with their parents. Each school in the district has its own dates and times for these events. Additionally, kindergartners will start school with staggered attendance, separated by last name. Below is a list of each school’s Kindergarten Kickstart date as well as back to school event information:

Chambersburg Area Middle School North’s new student orientation is on Aug. 12. Middle School South’s new student orientation is the following day, Aug. 13. Both schools open their doors for self-guided tours on Aug. 18.
Chambersburg Area Senior High School will host an orientation day on Aug. 20, and the district’s Career Magnet School is set for Aug. 13.
All Chambersburg Area School District schools’ first day will be Aug. 21.
Washington County Public Schools provide no information on back-to-school events – though the first day of classes will be Aug. 25.
Cascade Elementary will have the back-to-school event on Aug. 19. Greenbrier Elementary has its on Aug. 20. Hancock Elementary’s is on Aug. 21. Ruth Ann Monroe Primary, Aug. 21.
Boonsboro Middle School and Clear Spring Middle School will host open houses for students and parents on Aug. 21, with E. Russel Hicks Middle School hosting its event the following day, on Aug. 22. Springfield Middle School is throwing a barbecue for students and parents on Aug. 21.
Williamsport High School will have a back-to-school night on Aug. 21, and Hancock Middle Senior High School is hosting a back to school picnic on Sept. 4.
Fairfield Elementary will host a back-to-school night on Aug. 18, and Fairfield Middle and High Schools will have theirs the following day, Aug. 19, and the first day of school will be Aug. 20. The Fairfield School District also will have “popsicles on the playground” on Aug. 16 at 6:30 p.m. and senior picture day on Aug. 12 at 9 a.m.
Franklin County Career and Tech’s first day of school will be Aug. 21. School officials have not announced any back-to-school events at this time.
