FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. — A 76-year-old Fayetteville woman lost $98,000 in an alleged sweepstakes scam, according to Pennsylvania State Police.
Troopers responded to Pine Drive in Guilford Township on the afternoon of Sept. 5 for a report of theft, fraud or forgery.
Police said the woman believed she had won a Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes and sent a total of $98,000 to a scammer who used the alias Michael Collins.
State police did not release additional information about the suspect. The Chambersburg station is investigating.
Anyone who believes they have been scammed should contact law enforcement immediately. Residents are urged not to trust unsolicited calls, text messages or emails requesting money and to verify communications directly with the organization before clicking links.
