Weekend road work postponed on SB I-81, NB work to continue

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has postponed road work planned for this weekend on southbound Interstate 81 in southern Franklin County due to the forecast for rain.

This work includes completing a barrier on southbound I-81 at the Route 163/State Line bridge. A press release will be issued when this work has been rescheduled.

Resurfacing planned for northbound I-81 is still expected to be performed next week.

Beginning at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 28, paving will begin on northbound I-81 in the area of the northbound Interstate 81 Welcome Center, located just north of Exit 1 (Route 163/State Line).

The Welcome Center is expected to be closed from 6 p.m. Monday, June 29, until Wednesday, July 1, at 6 a.m. The contractor will place the first (binder) layer of pavement on the shoulders and acceleration and deceleration lanes during that time.

The next available rest area is just south of Exit 37 (Route 233/Newville) in Cumberland County.

This work is weather dependent and may be rescheduled in the event of rain.

Concrete repairs on southbound I-81 are expected to be completed this week and placement of the first (binder) layer of pavement on northbound I-81 should be completed by the end of next week prior to the Fourth of July holiday. After the holiday, the contractor will begin paving in the southbound direction. Once the first layer of paving is completed in 2 to 3 weeks, they will start placing final wearing course.

A right lane closure on northbound I-81 is tentatively scheduled for the weekend of July 10-13 for barrier work at the Milnor Road overpass. An updated press release will be issued when this work is confirmed.

This project consists of milling, concrete patching, asphalt resurfacing, guiderail updates, signage, and pavement markings on northbound and southbound I-81 from the Maryland State Line to Milepost 6, including ramps located within the project limits.

.Travelers are reminded to be alert for these operations, to obey work zone signs, and to use caution when driving through work zones for their safety, as well as for the safety of the road crews.

New Enterprise Stone and Lime Co., Inc. of New Enterprise, Pennsylvania, is the contractor on this $17.8 million project. All work is expected to be completed by July 16, 2027.
