WC spring season reaches midway point

Blink.

That’s about as long as it took to complete the first half of the Washington County Spring season. In a bat of an eye, the area schools are reaching that midway point of their schedules.

This final athletic leg of the school year is nothing more than a six-week sprint with many obstacles. Weather, early dusk and May’s impending start of the state tournament postseason compact these sports into tight little windows of action. Fast starts are a must in these sports. There isn’t time for steady improvement.

Some teams have hit the ground running this season. Start with the North Hagerstown baseball team with a 7-0 start. In softball, South Hagerstown is showing success, second to just Boonsboro in the early going. Smithsburg, the county’s perennially successful boys lacrosse team, is facing a challenge from Boonsboro for that top spot. Meanwhile, individual efforts are blossoming for a number of track performers at North and South Hagerstown.

Time is running out … but they ain’t done yet. There’s still a little more than half the season remaining.
