They say when the going gets tough, the tough get going.
Well, the Waynesboro Area Senior High School varsity golf team will probably need to get going – and quick.
Head coach Ryan Henderson’s linksters have struggled to a 1-9 start after the first two Mid-Penn Colonial Division matches, including 1-4 in the season opener at Waynesboro Country Club.
Add Landon Crable’s mid-match scratch, and Waynesboro went winless in the next contest at Penn National Founders Club.
“Landon did not finish due to an illness,” explained Henderson. “That cost us dearly as a team, probably 20 strokes. We finished dead last, but that doesn’t mean we’re giving up. We’ve got lots of work to do, and we’re going to get back to it.”
Northern York and Gettysburg are off to the fastest starts among the divisional teams, which, aside from Waynesboro, include Chambersburg, Gettysburg, Shippensburg and Greencastle-Antrim.
The Polar Bears are 8-2 headed into the third league match on Monday, Aug. 24 at Gettysburg National Golf Club. Northern finished nine strokes ahead of runner-up Greencastle with a score of 323, setting a pretty high standard for the remaining five teams.
Gettysburg, winners of the first league match on Monday, Aug. 17, sports an identical 8-2 record as Northern. That’s because the Polar Bears were 3-2 in that meet, being supplanted by Shippensburg, who placed second.
The Blue Devils, which carded a collective 332, were followed by Gettysburg (343), Shippensburg (344), Chambersburg (347) and Waynesboro (362).
Northern’s effort was bolstered by three top-five finishes, including medalist Trent Bankert. Bankert shot 73, while teammates Garrett Mainhart and Cole Syvertson placed tied for second and tied for fifth, respectively.
Waynesboro’s Caiden Shacreaw finished with 83 and in 10th place overall. Abby Byers shot 85 and was tied for 12th place. Rylan Nichols carded 91.
Greencastle and Shippensburg are both 6-4.
The Blue Devils got strong performances out of their top four. Camden Eby and Bryce Davison each shot 81, earning co-seventh-place finishes. Landon Summers and Jex McDowell rounded out the top four with identical scores of 85.
