WAYNESBORO – The Waynesboro Area Board of Education has moved its 5:30 p.m. Monday open hearing from district offices to Hooverville Elementary.
The hearing is at the request of former Summitview Elementary School Steven Pappas, who was demoted to a teaching position by the board in November. Pappas was entitled to seek a public or private hearing or no hearing in this case and chose the public hearing.
Hooverville Elementary is at 10829 Buchanan Trail East,. Pappas had served as a Waynesboro principal since 2013. Former Assistant Principal Mark Klink has been serving as acting principal at Summitview for some time.
Pappas was placed on leave in September, and his demotion to teacher was approved by the board in November, according to board minutes and documents. Pappas was accused of insubordination, urging teachers not to join the union and disparaging the cafeteria food, among other things.
Two parents spoke about Pappas at a Dec. 16 school board meeting, one of them, Kyle Walck, called Pappas a man of great integrity, who has his and his family’s “full support.” The second, America Brosius, referred to the multi-page letter to Pappas the district posted, outlining the basis the superintendent gave for his removal. Brosius, a past PTO president and regular school volunteer, criticized the posting, saying she was “disappointed and concerned for the future of this school district.”
