WAYNESBORO – Dr. Greg Lyon-Loftus, who chaired the Rotary Club’s annual speech competition, told Rotarians last week about the four finalists in the annual Four-Way Test Speech Contest. The finalists were selected from 12 students who originally participated at the high school.
Lyon-Loftus praised it as “an important opportunity to reach out to the youth of our community.
“The Four-Way Test,” he said, offers “a simple, pragmatic way to live,” and sets good behavioral goals for young people.
The four finalists, Ella Snelbaker, Andrianna Gladhill, Quinn Sanders and Sayvian Holliman, gave speeches on how the tenets of the Four-Way Test applied to issues of the day.
Ella discussed ethical agricultural practices, Andrianna related the principles to cystic fibrosis treatment, Quinn discussed the “service above self” of his volunteer soccer coach, and Sayvian contrasted test principles with the negative aspects of social media.
Sayvian was the winner of this year’s local contest, followed by Andrianna, Quinn and Ella in that order. The first place prize was $300, followed by $200 for second an $100 for the other places. Sayvian will advance to regional competition, where he’ll get the opportunity to go on to state competition.
