GREENCASTLE – Some days golf is a spoiled long walk.

Other days it’s a rewarding venture out into nature.

On Thursday afternoon at Greencastle Golf Club, the Waynesboro Area Senior High School varsity team earned a very important Mid-Penn Colonial Division meet victory. Waynesboro carded a team score of 332, while Northern York, winners of the season-opening meet on Tuesday in Gettysburg, finished with a 341.

It was a significant turnaround for head coach Ryan Henderson’s team, which lost by seven strokes to the Polar Bears on Tuesday, 327-334.

“Tyler (Fortney) led the way once again with a strong 73,” said Henderson, who got solid rounds out of all four top scorers. “He was medalist by two shots. Kellan (Smith) had a nice rebound round and shot 83 for the team’s second-best score. I’m very happy he found his game and contributed in a big way.

“Andrew Soffe and Stone Taylor both shot 88, which helped to solidify the win. I’m very happy to be back on top once again. I hope to stay there.”

The win evened the early-season standings with Northern. Both teams are 11-1. Shippensburg once again placed third and is in third place with an 8-4 record.

Greencastle-Antrim was fourth followed by Gettysburg, James Buchanan and Big Spring.

Waynesboro hosts the next divisional meeting on Monday at 2 p.m.

Fortney shot 72 on Tuesday at Gettysburg National Golf Club. Smith improved his score by 10 strokes. It helped offset a rough outing for Soffe, who carded an 88. Soffe shot 79 two days earlier. Taylor bettered his round by two strokes Thursday.

Northern’s Garrett White (75) and Logan White (80) finished second and third in the individual standings. Greencastle’s Cooper Swam and Shippensburg’s Mason Fogelsonger tied for fourth place with 82. Smith was sixth. Soffe and Taylor tied for 10th
