WAYNESBORO – The Borough of Waynesboro Fire Department drew families to its annual Fire Prevention Open House on Saturday, Oct. 4, where children explored the station and learned vital safety skills.
Robert Atkinson organized the event and served as tour guide, leading groups through the kitchen, TV room and locker room. Fire gear hung in an open locker for display, though Atkinson explained that crews stored it in the fire truck in the parking lot to allow donning within 60 seconds of an alarm.
Atkinson demonstrated proper extinguisher use for the children, who then climbed aboard a fire truck for a close-up look. He also distributed fire hats, flyers and posters on prevention tips.
Rob Doverspike assisted with the day’s activities, while Fire Chief Ray Griffith oversaw operations.
Amy Meek, Jim Meek and Matthew Bonner of Blue Ridge Fire and Rescue Company 4 brought their fire safety train, which Candin Mills drove for short rides that delighted the young attendees.
The event highlighted fire safety amid fall’s increased risks, fostering community ties to the department’s mission.
