Waynesboro American Legion nabs three wins

Waynesboro American Legion Post 15 won three Franklin County American Legion League games this week to improve its league record to 6-3. LEE GOODWIN/LOCAL.NEWS

The Waynesboro American Legion Post 15 baseball team posted three wins this week to raise their record to 6-3 in the Franklin County American Legion League.

Waynesboro stands one game back from division leading Chambersburg heading into the second half of the season.

In the first game of the week on Monday, June 18, Waynesboro notched a 4-3 win over Chambersburg.

Waynesboro came back from a 3-0 deficit with a four-run sixth inning to beat first-place Chambersburg at Tom Robinson Field.

Three walks loaded the bases with one out. Ethan Hotchkiss followed with a swinging bunt to the third-base side that was overthrown at first to lead to a three-base error and a tie game.

Garrett Blount then followed with an RBI single through a drawn-in infield to put Waynesboro in the lead.

Izzy Reed came on in relief of starter Garrett Beaver and pitched out of a bases-loaded no-outs jam by striking out the side to earn the save.

Beaver pitched six strong innings for the win, striking out seven while walking one batter.

On the next day at Fayetteville, Waynesboro dominated Fayetteville in a 12-1 win

Waynesboro pulled away late in this one with 11 runs over the final three innings on Tuesday night.

Bryce Shaffer went 6 2/3 innings, striking out 12 and walking three to pick up the win.

Blake Daywalt got the final out to secure the victory.

Blount led the Waynesboro attack with three hits and five RBIs. Daywalt drove in three runs

In the final game of the week, Waynesboro edged Shippensburg 4-3 at Tom Robinson Field.

Just like earlier in the week, Post 15 once again found themselves behind 3-0 after surrendering three runs in the top of the first inning.

Starting pitcher Logan Clapsaddle would then settle down and be in cruise control the rest of the game. Clapsaddle struck out five and only walked one batter in the complete-game effort.

Waynesboro cut the lead to 3-2 in the third frame. Josh Clapsaddle and Fred Guarino drove in runs.

Guarino drove in Clapsaddle with the tying run in the fifth inning.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Waynesboro loaded the bases with one out. In a strange ending to the game, Post 15 scored the winning run when the ball was thrown out of play prior to a pitch in a non-time out situation.

Guarino and Dylan Morgan each had two hits for Post 15.

Waynesboro is next in action with a Monday home game against McConnellsburg.
