Washington Township Supervisors to meet July 7

ROUZERVILLE – A regular meeting of the Washington Township Supervisors will take place on Monday, July 7, at 1:30 pm at the township offices located at 11798 Buchanan Trail E. in Rouzerville. While the meeting appears fairly routine, a public comment period is included.

The supervisors meet on the first Monday of each month.

On Monday, July 14, at 1:30 pm, Washington Township will hold a public hearing and meeting to discuss amendments to the township’s zoning ordinance and comprehensive plan. The meeting’s purpose will be to gather public comment on proposed amendments to the code of Washington Township and the Joint Comprehensive Plan of the Borough of Waynesboro and Washington Township.

Immediately after the public hearing, the board will consider enacting the proposed amendments in a regularly scheduled meeting at the same location. The title and a summary of these proposed amendments are available on the township’s website.

Washington Township has five supervisors, with Scott Stine serving as the current chairman and C. Stuart McCleaf as vice chairman. The three additional supervisors are Barbara McCracken, Charles Strausbaugh and Ted Snowberger. Each elected supervisor serves a six-year term, and these board members combine executive and legislative roles as they enact ordinances and also administer the township’s government.

These board members also serve on various committees to help improve the township’s quality of life, including the Police/Drug Task Force, Utilities, Economic Development, Planning and Zoning, and Equipment and Technology.

Vernon Ashway is the Washington Township manager, Keller Moore is the planning and zoning officer, Zachary Mills is the township solicitor, and Karen Hargrave is the township secretary and treasurer.

Planning committees and workshop meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month at the township offices. In the event any of the meeting dates fall on holidays, readers may check the township website for schedules: washtwp-franklin.org. All township meetings are open to the public and take place in the Washington Township Municipal Office Meeting Room. The agenda and meeting minutes are available online.

Supervisor meetings begin with public comments from the floor. Re-zoning issues are typically discussed before prior meeting minutes are approved. Meetings progress with several reports from local fire and EMS providers, an assistant zoning officer report, a manager’s report and a report from the city attorney.

The township’s website also provides vital information on right-to-know issues, public notices, emergency services, upcoming events, parks and recreation and water, sewer and septic services.
