HAGERSTOWN – Washington County Transit has been awarded a $2.8 million federal Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development grant, funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation, to support the design and permitting of a new transit administration and maintenance facility, county officials announced.
The grant, part of a nearly $500 million federal initiative to enhance infrastructure nationwide, will bolster the county’s efforts to modernize its transit system. Secured with support from the Maryland Department of Transportation, the grant aims to improve transportation access for both rural and urban communities.
“This award is a game-changer for public transportation in Washington County,” Board of County Commissioners John F. Barr said. “By investing in our transit infrastructure, we are investing in the future of our workforce, our seniors and our students. This funding will help connect people to opportunity.”
The new facility will provide expanded space for offices, fleet maintenance, driver training and equipment to support future transit service growth. The project promises to enhance the efficiency and accessibility of public transit in the region, particularly for residents seeking access to employment opportunities in logistics and warehousing, as well as essential services like medical facilities.
“Expanding safe transit options and affordably connecting Marylanders to jobs and economic opportunities are our top priorities,” said Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul J. Wiedefeld. “This grant will advance Washington County’s new bus facility to final design, laying the foundation to grow the county’s transit system.”
Construction funding is not included in the award, but assistance in getting the project through the design phase will help the county pursue more financing and help it keep pace with the rising demand for public transportation.
The ultimate aim of the federal program is to foster economic growth by improving access to jobs in rural areas, connecting workers to retail centers, healthcare facilities and delivery hubs for essential services.
Design planning for the facility will begin later this year.
